It really does work. I have never used sand but have been successful with Sphagnum moss (make sure its New Zealand moss - not all moss is created equally).
I use plastic bakery trays that comes with a top and a bottom. Cut holes in the top for air. Layer some perlite, sand or aquarium gravel in the bottom and put well hydrated moss on top. Lay the stem (the hole stem unless its too long) on the moss and press it down. Keep the moss wet - the perlite/gravel will act as a reservoir. Put the lid on. Bottom heat helps. It will take weeks - months to see the first sign of life. Keep it watered - the heat mat will make it dry pretty fast, even with a lid. If you see signs of mold/fungus, use cinnamon.
When the plantlets have a good bunch of roots, you can cut the plantlets apart and pot them separately.
