This gorgeous iris popped up in the middle of a NoID bed. I have gone through my records. I never purchased an iris like this although I would have had I known of its existence.


Does anyone have any suggestions

It looks a like TB Iris 'Who Needs a Prince', which is in the Schreiner's catalog. I would remember ordering an iris like this. The name does not ring a bell. I will go check the Stout catalog.

I think that one is Care To Dance, Mary.

Care to Dance has whiter standards, Who Needs A Prince looks right on, maybe they sent you the wrong one. It's pretty for sure.

There is good chance that Schreiner's sent the wrong iris. Last summer, they sent three extra 'Amas' instead of three 'Obsidians'. IMO, Schreiner's bonuses are usually their least striking introductions. That would explain why this iris might have appeared in the NoID bed. If this is their mistake, then it is a happy one It makes up for my disappointment over 'Rum is the Reason'.

Urania1, I was attracted to 'Rum is the Reason' in their catalog, however, I did not order it. What was your objection to it. I am interested to hear your critique since it may stop me from spending the money.

The color or lack thereof. I will let you compare.

Woe I can see why you were seduced by their picture its jaw-dropping! Though that model looks like it's not only airbrushed but received a tummy tuck and nose job. Of course yours is still beautiful but I can see why you aren't thrilled with it. Still a great name and a lovely Iris. Do you think the form/color will improve or could it be affected by temp?

Wow, what a difference in color and shape! I'm glad that you posted this. I was seduced by the Schreiner's pic and was ready to buy when you made your post, after seeing the flower in your garden I will not be ordering and will save the space for something better. Thank you!

Tom ~ I noticed on the AIS wiki, that they show the picture that is on the Schreiner's website, but it is listed as waiting for registation information. That probably why it isn't in our database yet.

Mary ~ I had a less than spectacular order from Schreiner's. If I order anything from them, it will be because they have something that I want and no one else has it. They are famous for pictures that are way more colorful than what actually appears in the garden. I think they take more time on their catalogs than they do with their irises.

What I received from my small order last year was quite dried out. Some of the irises that I had not planted and we're sitting in sacks or boxes for over a month were greener than what they sent to me. I am even more disinclined to purchase from them again. There a lot more vendors than I ever imagined in my dreams, and most of them with better prices, and all with better quality. I would rather get lists and have to look them up, than being deceived by beautiful glossy photos that do not match the actual iris.

That's sad to hear Evelyn they are the closest Iris grower to me. I've read so much about them and even had a chance to visit them on the way back from a business trip. Unfortunately they didn't have anything for sale yet. The woman working in the office told me it would be another week. The grounds were well kept but so much smaller than expected. I wonder if they have other tracts of land? I used to make the trek down to Oregon to visit Heirloom gardens but that's been closed to the public and now they only sell roses online. I was hoping Shriners would be a good replacement, though the window in which their open is so small it's hard to get away this time of year.

Please do not dismiss Schreiner's. I have received great orders from them with healthy robust stock. In fact the rebloomers that I ordered from them and received last July bloomed in October. With that said, every nursery that puts out a catalog probably touches up their pics. Usually, when I am going to place an order I go to the database here to check realistic pics before placing the order. When an iris is not in the database we roll the dice and take the gamble. Some work out and some bloom displaying what we can now call the 'Rum is the Reason' effect.

The second bud opened today. It is much prettier although nothing like Schreiner's pictures.


Schreiner's has always sent me big rhizomes—theirs are invariably far bigger than the rhizomes I receive from other nurseries. Last fall I had the same experience as Jerry had. The rebloomers I received from them in August bloomed in fall. Pretty sweet.

I have had experiences similar to Evelyn with my last couple Schreiner's orders. I get rhizomes that are just as large or larger when ordering from other vendors. I haven't been as impressed with their new introductions in the last few years. They do like their rhizomes a lot, as reflected in their prices. Their customer service can be less then satisfactory depending on who you happen to get when you call them to correct their errors.

Mary the second bloom is quite an improvement, very lovely in fact, but still not even close to Shriners picture. Jerry I appreciate your sharing. I won't write them off completely... and I will take your advice to check out othe images online. I've done that with prospective roses on HMF so it makes sense to do the same with Irises.

I agree about Shriner's photos. The degree they take enhancement to is almost false advertising.

I have a question, how often do you guys find a tiny one that may have started from a seed? I have many more daylilies and I know that on occasion I get one to grow near the mother plant. I try to pot them up and not ship as the original .

It is a keeper, for me. I have a few that I grow just because I like them. I have been told I was a plant snob for tagging everything but I do keep a few unknowns.

If you have a seed, it may not bloom true, in which case labeling is beside the point. I have a huge dedicated bed of NoIDs that I touch only to divide. There are some volunteers that have popped up for me that are probably the result of cross pollination or seedlings that did not bloom true.
