I was watching YouTube videos and doing some research on the Internet and thought I'd give it a try. I used a few of my semps making sure I was able to get clean leaf removals and put slots through the plastic wrap which I then inserted each leaf through. I filled the mason jar all the way to the top leaving about an inch from the leaves. I did this a few weeks ago and have been meaning to toss them out because they were starting to look so bad. I don't know if I would say it was successful since only 8 rooted and about 30 perished. Plus I think those 8 came from the same semp. I tried about 4 different ones and wished I would've taken better notes, lol.







Now on to the next steps to see if I can keep them alive.

Interesting. It might be worth exploring propagation from individual leaves using a different medium than water. What might work at higher percentage is to attempt rooting in a breathable yet moisture retentive medium such as coir, I bought a couple inexpensive bags as Lowe's a couple weeks back. If semp leaves are willing to root at the heal of leaf base (not a cut leaf base, but a leaf that is gently detached intact via wriggling a healthy leaf side to side), treat with rooting compound, and insert base of leaves shallowly into moist coir medium. If they do root, I wonder how it can start reforming a rosette. Wonder if that might work with heuffelii.

That's interesting Mark. I might have to try that in the future. As far as heuffelii go, I don't have any of those to try.

I do think if it starts forming a new rosette, it will form close to where the roots are. I've had some leaves that I didn't clean out of my wash tubs in the past and I had one growing right by where it was removed. It was laying on the rocks close to the soil and I just happened to notice it growing one day. I didn't really keep up with it and I can't remember if it survived or not.

Chad, Mark et al - my best result for leaf propagation is taking a leaf from near the outside of the rosette, trying to get a bit of the stem cells, propping up the leaf in the soil/chicken grit. Keeping this in shade, spray misting at least once per day, and after a week or so there are roots, this can then be planted, but still in shade, and watering a little more than other semps. I've had good success with any of the semps that are already fast growing.
