If I have any around, I use Milorganite. Not easy to find in Canada and I don't make a huge issue of looking for it. When I plant hostas, I put a handful of alfalfa pellets in the hole. For my seedlings, I sometimes use water soluble tomato fertilizer in a weak solution. And sometimes during the summer I brew up a batch of alfalfa tea in a garbage pail and water them.
