So, I only recently began to have an interested in roses (last week)

But I've been into hybridizing(biology) for many years (20). I started breeding scorpions, tarantulas and then moved to snakes. after a while though animals become a lot of work so I moved to my families hobby (flowers) I mess with a lot of native stuff trillium, cranes bill, azaleas, heucheras, anything native to Alabama. but I also mess with a few other things.

Anyways I noticed a Rose growing in my pasture. I dug it up and took it home. They have never really caught my attention before but now they have. Im Interested to see any f1 hybrids pics from native roses if you have them.

Hi Clockwork,

For more info and pictures, try the database here. I'm new here too so I don't know if they have much about wild roses there. Maybe someone who's been here longer can chime in. Another good resource is HelpMeFind Roses. That site has photos and info of more roses than you could ever imagine. But first it would help if you could identify your rose. You might want to post a picture of it in bloom, along with its stems, thorns and leaves. Maybe someone on here will recognize it.

It is most likely to be Macarteny Rose: Rosa bracteata rosales, a noxious invasive in the southern states.

Not necessarily, porkpal. It could be rosier de macartney, as you suggest. Right off the top of my head, I can think of the following possibilities. It could be the exotic invasive multiflora rose, the bane of farmers and landowners here and, I think, probably in Alabama. It could be rosa carolina, aka the Pasture rose, one I've seen here growing along roads, or maybe rosa virginiana.. It could also be rosa palustris aka swamp rose or it could be rosa setigera. It could even be an old rose that was once in cultivation, planted by someone now long gone.

Clockwork, without a picture or even a description we can't narrow it down any better than that. Also, it would help to narrow it down a little if you could tell us where you found your rose in Alabama. Northeast? Southwest? Central?

Wow, I need to read more carefully. So, Clockwork, you are looking for F1 HYBRIDS of wild roses. I think there are. You will still need to identify your rose. Then maybe we can come up with more than a wild guess.

BTW if you are willing to come up with $24, you can buy the premium membership at HelpMeFind where you will not only find photos, descriptions and comments from growers, you will also gain access to its linage and offspring. You will be able to do an advanced search that may help you find hybrids of your rose. Not to mention, there is a breeders' forum where someone may know who has worked with your rose in a breeding program. Does that help? Oh, I do not own stock or profit in any way from this website but I love my premium membership and use it a lot.

Haha thanks guys well. honestly ive been in the woods searching for roses ive found several different types. but none are in bloom. I live in cullman which is northern central Alabama. . Alabama has a plant database by county and only two roses are documented in my county. 1 being rosa carolina the other i believe is multiflora. could you make an id without blooms?

I used to breed tarantulas as well. Had around 60-70 species of them (usually several breeding sized females and one or two males for each species, as needed).

Thats awesome! I never got tht involved with the tarantulas i was around 18 when i was doing that. 29 now. timing the last male molt(hook molt) always seems a bit difficult when your low on resources and live east of the Mississippi. Again though like with my snakes after a bit it becomes a lot of work I poured a lot of money into it and lost a ton here ill show you what i was working on :)

this is my boy spock. gone now. one of the first pink corn snakes. I was really consumed by pollygentics. I had about $7000 in snakes and well life snuck up and punched me in the face . got a divorce sold everything. too depressed to mess with them.

I knew a lot of other tarantula breeders and we shared males regularly in exchange for some of the spiderlings in the result of a successful hook-up.
