I have never done this before since I'm a newbie but
I'll ask anyway. Can I harvest wet pollen, bring it inside
Allowing it to dry and then use it in my hybridizing?
In short will be dry and be just effective?

Bootch,

Hello there! Unfortunately, wet pollen typically does not work well. I'm not an expert on the matter, but I've heard it from enough people who are to know that it's probably a waste of your time to try pollinating with it unless there is no way to get pollen from that plant again. I recommend just waiting until the next bloom opens and use pollen from that. If it is a matter that you have two blooms open on the same day that you want to cross and you aren't sure that you will get that opportunity again, keep in mind that you can store pollen in the freezer, as long as it has been dried out before you put it in there. I save pollen from particularly desirable daylilies so that when blooms open that I want to cross it with, I have pollen that I can thaw out and and use.

Also, just so that you know, you put this in the 'Classifieds and Group Buys' section, but I think you meant to put this in the Daylily forum. Maybe a moderator could move it there for you?

I wanted to ask what might be a dumb question - after it rains, is the stigma of a flower ruined, or can it still accept pollen? Is the stigma fluid that carries the pollen washed away? The reason I ask is that it's been raining a lot, and I'm wondering is that's why my crossed blooms are falling off.

Or if it's cause I'm using frozen pollen.

It may depend on whether it is a light short rain versus long heavy downpours, etc. The stigma may still be able to accept pollen after short light rainfalls but it may be damaged after heavy downpours. The stigma may or may not be moist with stigmatic fluid when you pollinate. If it is dry then it may be able to produce its stigmatic fluid after the pollen is present.

Thank you, Maurice. I guess I'll just have to keep trying.

While researching further this morning, I read on another site that you can use fluid from another daylily bloom to moisten or stimulate the stigma of your pod parent. Maybe I will try that as well. It couldn't hurt!
