In my NJ garden I have had to contend with a climbing, thorny vine. The mature vines are dark and somewhat like encountering barbed wire. Does anyone know what it is?

It looks like greenbriar vine. This website below is from Texas but I checked and it apparently does occur in New Jersey.

I agree, probably Round Leaf Greenbrier (Smilax rotundifolia) which is present in many areas, including N.J.

Good photos on this page of Plants of Southern N.J.: https://www.cumauriceriver.org...

Here in West Virginia, we have the Greenbrier RIver, Greenbrier County and a town named "Ronceverte" which is French for the word, greenbrier. The stuff grows everywhere here.

My MIL says you have to dig them out to keep them from returning. Our neighbor has one on his side of the fence that keeps growing onto our side and I'm tempted to go over there and remove it for him (I wouldn't though, but it's tempting).
