Hello Rose Lovers!
I am looking for approximately 5 volunteers from western states only (sorry) to help me out with determining shipping to the far western states. As a brand new own root nursery, I am still figuring lots of things out.
Agricultural guidelines have strict requirements shipping into California, Washington, Arizona, Nevada, Idaho and Utah from the Midwest, primarily due to Japanese Beetles.
I will be excluding California (because the Ag guidelines are so prohibitive) but would still like to offer shipping to WA, AZ,NV,ID, UT.
For an own root band sized rose, the only real viable shipping option for me (to these 5 states) will be bareroot. Which will mean that I will wash off all the soil, wrap the roots well in paper towels and submerse until drenched, squeeze most of the water out and wrap the wet roots and paper towels in a plastic baggie, and seal well.
I will be shipping flat rate priority mail.
I'm not thrilled to have to wash off all the soil, but if I want to ship to these 5 states, I have little choice at this time. I'd like to see if the baby roses ship well this way, bareroot.
I'm looking for someone from each of these 5 states, to receive a free rose (and free shipping) from me, (probably closer to the fall), and in return, I ask that you honestly tell me about how the rose was, once received. Was it still damp and doing well, or what? I need honesty to determine if I am going to be able to ship this way to these 5 states. All other states will be able to keep the soil intact during shipping.
I will pick the first person to contact me from each state to be the test recipient, as long as you are willing to follow through on what I need in return.
I am thinking it will probably be September before I am ready to test this, but wanted to put this out there to see if anyone is interested in helping me.

I am not sure yet which rose I will be sending. I will have to determine that closer to the time.

Many Thanks!

Mindy

Mindy, I'm not far enough west to help you on the shipping question, but could you use a huge bunch of empty band pots? My usual sources to give back these pots have gone out of business and I really hate to waste them. I also have a ton of gallon pots that Roses Unlimited doesn't want back if those would be useful to you. I'd be happy to ship them to you if you could use them.

Nippstress,
Yes! I was just looking on the Anderson website about ordering some more band pots. I would LOVE them. Thank you!! I don't think I need the gallon pots, but the band pots, absolutely! Just let me know what I owe you for shipping and all that. I assume there is a way you can private message me the info, and your address to send the money. I'm pretty new on here and haven't figured that all out yet.

Thank you again!

Very cool Mindy - glad to see you could use the band pots. If you want to send me a message at my home (pass through) email I can get a message back to you. It's (take out the spaces and put in the punctuation): nippstress11 at ymail dot com. If you'd rather send me a rose of your choice in spring than sending money for postage, that would be an even trade as far as I'm concerned and avoid cash outlay for you. That way you can check out the shipping to Nebraska as well (not that you had the question of course, but it can't hurt).
I probably have at least 200 band pots and possibly 300 - I haven't dug into that pile in a long time and it's at least 3 years worth of bands.

Oscar,

It's a unique pot, with just an T of plastic across the bottom, and deep, for good root growth. Many nurseries I think propagate in them, like I do. Some nurseries send the roses still in them, thus why Nipstress has so many!

I also wish you the best of luck. It has been quite a while now but I received some first year roses bare rooted. I'm not positive but it seems like it was Ashdown Roses was the nursery that tried it this way.

Any other volunteers out there from ID, WA, AZ and OR? I've found my NV volunteer.
I have a cousin in Phoenix and a cousin in Seattle, but neither of them grow roses, so I don't think they would know what I'm looking for really.

Thank you!

For anyone following this post, I should be ready in a couple weeks to send out a test shipping rose. I can still accept a volunteer from Arizona and Idaho, if anyone is interested from either of those states.
Please send me a tree mail, or an email to [email protected].

Thank you!
