I think it can wait for several weeks. I have seen cuttings for sale in some garden stores, who knows how long they have been cut off from the main tree.
But you do have to note that as the season's change, cold weather will naturally induce dormancy. So even if you want it to perk up, it will not be as easy. So better to wait for Spring to plant it if that happens, just keep it stored in a dry area if it already is going into the cold months.
