I have never started Canna from seed, only division. Did you cross these? Both are very pretty! Lovey dubby

Thank You! I've never tried crossing a canna, these where seeds given to me by a friend and most likely bee pollinated. I'll have a few more seedlings to post pics of next year. It has been really rewarding growing them from seed. Canna virus can not be passed by seed so I only grow them via seeds. Many of the Dutch grown cannas offered from retailers have canna virus but because it's not a food crop it is still allowed to be shipped to the US Thumbs down
Do your cannas produce seeds? Many of the hybrids tend to be sterile.

Mine is a dwarf yellow and I keep it in a large container. It was a plant shared by division. I have always cut the bloom stalks off and never let them produce seed.

I have been told to keep the bloomed stalks cut will allow the plant to continue to deliver blooms. I do the same with a butterfly ginger.

I have a few friends that are interested in seeds and I'm in DND's seed swap every year so I try to save seeds whenever I can from almost everything. I hybridize daylilies and some fruiting fruiting plants. I may try my hand at hybridizing a few cannas next year to come up with something new. Most of the seedlings I grew so far look just like the pod parent so most likely they where self pollinated and come somewhat true from seed. A few had darker foliage than other seedlings from the same batch so there is some variation but all the flowers have looked like the pod parent's flowers.

Congrats on your beautiful seedlings! How did you start your seeds? I have seeds from bee pollination this year that I collected, and I would love to try growing them.

Thanks Annette, I just stuck them in some potting soil about 3 years ago. I didn't soak them or do anything special before planting but it may have been a good idea if I would have. I had about 10 different pots with 10 different types of canna seeds. 4 pots came up that spring, another 2 came up the following spring and believe it or not another pot came up this spring Shrug! canna seeds must stay viable for a long time in the soil until conditions are right for germination. If you do try growing cannas from seed don't give up if they don't sprout right away and don't reuse the soil from any unsprouted canna seedlings because you never know when they will decide to sprout Thumbs up

That is very pretty cannas... this thread has encourage me to try growing it again from seed.. I did in the past, but lost most all of my cannas due to neglect. for a more predictable result, nick a little part of the seed, just the shell, to allow water entering the seed (be careful, seed coat is very hard, but slippery... I use the edge of a nail cutter) then soak over night in water at room temp..they germinated better that way (probably better in spring ... other wise you will need artificial light and warmth...)

Hi Daniel, I have a lot of Canna seeds that I have collected but as of yet, have not grown from seeds but plan to this spring. I was thinking about putting some in pots with soil and setting them outside to freeze and see if they will grow this spring. I have Canna coming up all the time where I did not plant them but know they were planted there a year or two earlier so I know they came up from seeds that the previous plants dropped. Do you ever trade your canna seeds? I do not know the names of my Canna seeds but I would be willing to trade some to try to get other colors. I dig and store my Canna over winter and plant the bulbs in the spring.
