I "gang" potted cuttings to root many are showing leaves. there is only about 4 in potting mix in the 25 gal pot when should i re pot them?


Most concerned with the one up front but i have 10 of these pots and i have to "obtain" some more to individually plant them!!! i need i think about ohhhhh150 more pots i ordered this winter 150 1 gal pots and 75 3 gal pots and "obtained" about 100 2 gal pots and 100 gal pots AND 40 3 gal we wont discuss the larger ones but largest was a 90 gal pot!!!! sold lot of them!

Just in case you didn't know, Lowes is a recycle center for plastic pots and plant containers. I take mine there all the time - and sometimes I just "trade" in the ones I brought for the size I need. It is a win-win - you get the pots you need and Lowes doesn't have to handle the recycling. The collecting rack is usually near the back or the side-back of the Garden Center. And it is usually one of those rolling racks with multiple shelves. I feel pretty sure that you could have whatever pots you want from the recycle rack, but maybe double check with a clerk. And if you are buying soil or something, I would definitely think they wouldn't mind you taking some of the recycle pots. The manager at mine never minds at all if I take some.

So Hetty you are saying then the best time to transplant plumeria is DURING active growth NOT when dormant? Or have I got that wrong?

Mike is wanting to repot them from his 'gang rooting' pot (where they are all huddling together making roots) and was asking when it is time to give them their own pot (as in: are rooted). That is usually indicated by vigorous leaf growth.

If you want to move an existing (already rooted) plant outside, or step up from one size pot to the next, it is recommended to do this in the dormant stage or when they are just breaking dormancy so you don't break off too many of the feeder roots in the process.

I can't believe your photos above! WOW! That is a lot of plants! When do you have time to cook? And to run co-ops? I bet it is just gorgeous around your home - what an incredible collection.

well sense i have had my car accident a year ago i have not been able to return to work then had spinal fusion surgery in dec and had to have something to do. it does get challenging at times with so many plants truly they just exploded last year!!! when i return to work will be the test how to manage it all with working 8 hrs a day

that is chip our dog SO very smart i know she understands English!! we saved her from going to the pound I think she was abused as a puppy and now she has a VERY GOOD LIFE!! has us wrapped around her toe...LOL

Our dog is we think 7 yrs old starting to show little age but she is our baby girl!!!

I know from experience how much work tending so many plants can be, and I haven't had a paying job in almost 20 years! I'm getting old and I have downsized a lot but even with the plants I still have it seems like a full time job ... I can't imagine tending to that number of plants and working 8 hour days too ... that would be way too much stress for this ole' gal!


Hetty: I've been meaning to ask you about the one Plumeria I have left and since Mike's thread is regarding transplanting/repotting I figured I'd post a picture and ask you here instead of starting another thread. Hope you don't mind Mike ... I can remove this part of my post if necessary.

Anyhow ... I've had this Plumie for a few years, started from a little stick. It's usually fully leafed out by now but for some reason this year it's still bare of any sign of leaves. I've thought about planting it in the ground in a protected area of the yard but can't decide for sure if I want to go that route since it seems our winters are getting colder every year! This plant is root bound in the current container so if I don't put it in the ground I need to find a larger pot or do some root pruning and give it fresh potting medium ... just wondering what you think? Any idea why it may still be leafless? I don't know much at all about Plumeria other than that I love, love, love the beautiful fragrant blooms and I'd hate to lose this plant. The others were quite small that I gave to neighbors before I moved and theirs have all leafed out already.

I want to but in some.....first you are more then welcome posting here i was going to treemail Hetty and decided its a topic that others can benefit that why we are here right!!!
2nd Yes i am a chef by trade BUT i have had a car accident and have been out of work for little more then a year, I did have surgery in dec and when i started getting better i dove in to plants BIG time and it is a chore BUT most of my plants require the same care which makes it easier.

Now im going to take a stab at you plant it looks like a few of the tips are good and green which is a great sign. i dont see anything that would be a bad sign. if the plant is root bound I would personalty re pot ASAP and just be carefully to try not to break roots off. New soil would be a big benefit. you can plant in ground as long as it drains well. you can dig up every year or try to protect in the ground when its frost or freezes.

You can also re-pot in larger pot and sink in to the ground. this is what i have done so i can pull the pot out and keep the main root-ball in tact. I try to use 2 pots one as a sleeve and i can lift in and out easier. the roots will grow out of the holes and seek more room i9 pot extra holes and larger ones in the pots so they can

now about your plumeria has it been in the sun and has it gotten watered? i have 40 plants that are 20 of one 20 of the other kind and of the 40 all are growing great and full but 2 are not but i know that the tips are turning and getting ready to leaf out. some are suborn.

Wait see what Hetty saids and if im even close!!!

Now i will wait to see Hettys suggestions to see if im learning and getting to know these plants!!!

I think water may be an issue. Also, that is a small pot for that size plant. I personally would put it in the ground, and you know you can store them barerooted in the winter?

Thanks you two! The pot is too small for the root system of this plant ... roots have been growing out the drainage holes for the past couple of years so it's probably way past time to get it out of that container! I still haven't decided if I want to find it a permanent place in ground or keep it as a container plant but it will probably be the latter so that if we do have extended cold during the winter I can move it into the house or garage. I've seen a very large Plumeria tree in a yard here in town, on the south side of the house and it's been there for quite a few years ... seems to have come through our cold winters just fine but they have a lot of big trees in the yard which probably gives it some protection from frost and they cover the Plumeria with blankets on cold nights.

Hetty: You are correct regarding water issues. It's been very dry here for awhile now ... we finally got a nice rain about a week ago but we've been in extreme drought conditions and I was not watering anything regularly. The sprinkler timers are now fixed so they get water twice a week when the lawn is irrigated ... maybe I will see a change and signs of leaf growth soon! I think next week I will try to find a larger container and mix up some fresh potting medium and re-pot it. I will keep you posted!

Lin - again: If you plant it in the ground it is not a huge job to pull it out in the fall and store bare rooted in the garage or similar place. The plant will thank you.
A pot bound plant will not be able to take up water or nutrients sufficiently. People tend to forget these are meant to be trees....

I sink mine into the ground in generous-sized pots. Do you think next year I can forgo the pots and just plant them directly in the ground? Will they be just about the same effort to lift?

I don't have any choice here in Jacksonville. I get 2+ HARD freezes at my house every year. The plumeria have to be lifted and brought into the garage.
