You can do that. Keep in a sunny window and don't overwater. What zone are you in?

I have three of these pretty little hanging baskets and want to winter them in the Greenhouse. Do you have any suggestions as to how I should do that? I have never tried to keep portulaca from one year to the next before and have no clue what I am doing. Or how I am doing it. Please help me figure it out.

Those are beautiful! I would just cut them back, not let them bloom over the winter, and give just enough water to stay alive. I'm thinking they will get plenty of sun in a greenhouse and may even require more water because of that.

I was wondering how I was going to keep them from blooming but if I cut them back and keep them in a shaded area it may work. Thanks Vickie.

I've never tried to manipulate the blooming on the ones I save inside for winter. Only those directly adjacent to the best-sun spots bloom over winter. The other plants that don't get enough sun to bloom look sad but it doesn't affect their performance when outside again the following summer.

Can you raise portulaca from cuttings? When I trim mine back I am going to have loads of cuttings. Wondered if I stuck them in soil would they root. Or, do you root them in water, or do you just pitch them? They are so pretty and now are in the Greenhouse since this morning. Temperatures are really going to plunge tonight so I wanted to more safe then sorry. I want to keep these alive if possible.

I would try to root both ways - in water and in soil. I'm glad you got yours in the greenhouse before the cold comes in. Thumbs up

JB, last year I took cuttings from the portulacas and purlanes that were in my daughter's yard. I planted them in soil, and they all grew well and looked wonderful all summer. Go for it! I have mine inside to wait til Spring.

Yes, I've never dug one back up to bring in, just new cuttings. Even if I did see them in stores every year, I can't afford to buy 100 of any plant. These pics show hundreds of cuttings.

OK, that sounds easy enough. Now all I have to do is decide when to do this trimming. They are still blooming but I think they are about finished. Thank you all for your help. I will keep you posted.

I have my cuttings in water. They are rooting and also bloom the whole time !

I have some cuttings in water. They have rooted in about a month. They also bloom the whole time they are in water and rooting. Which makes them a great choice to cut and put in vases for home decoration. Once rooted, just pop into some soil and you can always have purslane or portulaca! Awesome and beautiful plants. That don't need a ton of water and tolerate the heat! Good luck!
