Which ones are you growing, and what is the best way to grow them?

This year I have acquired just a few to try out. Some are doing well, and some not so much.

Afrosiab - looks good

Childsong - shriveled

Hakuna Matata - looking good

Signal Butte - looks fine

Striped Butterfly - looks fine

Tul Kerem - shriveled

I thought that I watered them the same. They are in large pots in sand on top of a well-drained potting soil with perlite added and some gravel on top.

Anyone have any suggestions?

The only one I am growing is Sheik which has withstood our deluge of rain so far and is sprouting leaves. It was nearly leafless when I got it. We shall see how it does. It is in the ground in rather sandy plain soil. No amendments.

I grow all of my arilbreds in the ground, nothing currently in pots. I've only had success with the 1/4 arils. I haven't done any special amending to keep them successfully, but there is some natural sand in the mix. Here's what I'm growing:

Heart of Hearts
Pounce
Artful Accent
Galaxina
Scarab
Afreet
Red Ahead
Undue Influence
Generic Artist
Jewel of Omar
Warrior Prince
Signal Butte
Free as the Wind
Sailing at Dawn
Sun and Snow
Eye to Eye
Light of Egypt
Confederate
Perry Dyer
Calypso Dancer
Aztec Prince

I keep killing them, except for Signal Butte, that one was hauled away by critters and never seen again.

Nothing!

No arilbreds yet. Though, I don't think they'd like my climate. Blinking

I don't have any pure Arils, just some various crosses...
They have all done very well for me so far and I've added several more this year.

I have them planted in the gardens the same as any other iris (always aiming for full sun and good-enough drainage, even though I don't always achieve that). I haven't attempted to do anything special with them just because they've got some Aril-ness in their genetics. It is my understanding that the thing they struggle with most is high humidity. We are pretty arid here in Utah so that's not a problem. I imagine you are not terribly humid in your location either, but I could be wrong Shrug!

My suggestion would be--if you are keeping them potted--don't create different layers of stuff in the pot because that really does mess with how water moves through it. Just keep it a nice, well-drained, homogeneous mix that any bearded iris would be happy in. Or put them in the ground.

Here are a few of my faves from last spring

I only have two, Arlecchino and Colombina and they are both new to me. I planted both directly in the garden, in almost pure native sand with just enough organics in it to make it look like actual soil when it is wet.

They are both from the same Marucchi cross, 'Turkish Pendant' X 'Farfui' , so I expect they should behave rather similar. One of the parents is an SDB, so I hope that means that they will be a bit more tolerant of moist soil as that is what I expect from an SDB.

Both have three increases and overall seems to do very well, despite a little setback caused by an unknown pest (maybe a cutworm) that chewed of two of the increases leaving the baby fans on the ground. However no real harm was done as they both have grown back and hopefully this pest wont come back.

Bold Awakening is 1/2 Aril. I wish I could grow that one so badly. The colors are brilliant. I just realized that my Aztec Prince is 1/2 as well, which I didn't realize and it is doing ok for me, surprisingly.

Thank You! Jane, Liz, Rob, Dirt, daphne, William, and Lucy!

I think that the ones that did not do well were really too small. The rest are good size rhizomes and are looking healthy so far. Crossing Fingers!

Liz ~ That is quite an impressive list. If those grow well for you, then others should be successful with them.
