Hi I brought this peace lily about a month ago and last week decided to re pot it as it was well overdue an upgrade. I have started to notice a couple of brown spots starting to appear on the plants flowers and leaves. I have read it may be due to under watering as well as over watering. The soil is damp to touch but not so damp I can squeeze liquid out of it. I'm not sure if this is anything to worry about but I thought id ask what the best thing would be to do?

The flower is past its prime so don't worry about that. One brown leaf is also nothing to worry about. Does the pot have a drainage hole? What led you to repot it? Was it not doing well? What kind of watering does it get and where is the light source?

I know. A ton of questions.

Thanks for the reply, I doesn't have a drainage hole no as it is in a nicer pot indoors, I re potted it as I did not like the pot it was in plus the roots where growing out of the bottom of the plastic pot it was in. It was doing fine in the other pot but I want it to grow a lot bigger so I added some general purpose plant food in the pot as well. I water it when the soil starts to get dry about every 5 days and I spray the leaves every 2 days. It is not currently getting much light as in the hall. There are windows in the hall but it is not in front of the window. I read it did not need much light though.

It is unlikely that it needed repotting and some of the leaf discoloration may be related to that. I suggest that you remove any soil you added to the top of the original rootball. Then watch it carefully and don't water it until the leaves start to wilt just a bit. Provide lots of bright but indirect sunlight.

I wrote my last post before your recent reply.

Most plants prefer to be tightly potted and grow best when they are. Roots coming out of drain holes is not a good reason to repot. When you do repot, it is important to use a pot with drain holes. For future reference, keep the plant in its plastic pot and set that pot inside a more decorative ceramic planter like the one you used. Double-potting leaves the roots undisturbed and makes watering much easier.

Large pots and fertilizer do NOT make plants grow bigger except in very limited circumstances. The repotting will actually retard growth somewhat. Stop fertilizing. You can spray the leaves if you want, but it does not really benefit the plant in any significant way.

It does not sound like that location will provide adequate light. Peace Lilies do prefer low light, but that simply means just beyond the reach of the direct rays of the sun, usually within 3-5 feet of a very sunny window or even closer to a north window.

Because it is in a sealed planter, you have to be very careful not to overwater. Ideally, you water only just as or before the leaves start to wilt. Then, add just enough water so that it almost reaches the wilting point in about a week. You will have to experiment a bit to determine the right amount of water. The roots need oxygen as much as they need water and they get oxygen only when the soil is allowed to dry out a bit.
