Without looking at a mammal guide, I think it is a shrew. Short tails, pointed snout.
Again without a guide if memory serves, largest component of their diet is meat. So they are carnivores eating worms, grubs, beetles, beetle larvae, and things of that nature. There may be a few that consume a little vegetable matter, but not much. I would not imagine that they would be a problem in the garden. The moles have no external ears, very tiny eyes and a pointed head since they live in the leaf litter and burrows made by moles, chipmunks and voles.

It's a Short-tailed Shrew (Blarina brevicauda). It wouldn't have damaged your garden, and might actually be killing some of the animals that did, voles being the most likely culprit.

Shrew, more help then harm. If you have picture or can describe the damage I may be able to help you solve the issue.

Shrew. They are only a problem when, in their pursuit of "meat" (are grubs meat?), undermine your top heavy plants that then fall over. Hilarious! But please don't kill the shrews (or moles doing the same job).
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and proclaiming...."WOW What a Ride!!" -Mark Frost
