It is a bit hard to see, but I am thinking Hornet nest.
If this is correct, I would say lucky you. We once had a large nest in a nearby tree, we watched Baldfaced Hornets building it. That Summer we could sit outside without flies bothering us.

Definitely a hornet nest. After a couple hard frosts the hornets will die off and won't return to that particular nest.
