We've talked about this before, but for anyone new to freezing pollen, here's a tip Curt Hanson told me about that has worked very well. Place the stamen containing your desired anthers on a cheap paper plate and label them with the name of the cv. I like to use ones that aren't plastic coated but either will do. In a day or two the anthers will be loose and dry while the stamen have dessicated and will stick to the plate. With tweezers place only the anther into a micro tube, label it, and freeze. Reverse tweezers are great for this. Note: Make sure your DH who is cleaning out the basement knows there's frozen pollen in the mini-fridge so he doesn't unplug it!

Here's a pic of the pollen I collected today. My T17 seedling had 6 blooms and several polys today so I giggled when I saw all of it's anthers on the plate. They reminded me of tadpoles.

HA! Did you see my huge collection of paper plates? We do the same thing. Only you are smarter making lines to delineate each father. I try to put tets on the top, dips on the bottom , seedlings on one section etc. And then TRY to put the anthers all going in one direction. Yeah, like that is possible!

Shall remember to make pie wedges this year!

Leslie, just one question. You said it takes a day or two for the anther to break away from its stem. Will the pollen still be good after being out of the fridge for 2 days or do you put your paper plates in the fridge??

Cynthia, you do not 'have' to wait. I just fingernail the anther off when I first bring it in and it dries fluffy.

I keep the plates in our cool basement and yes the pollen is good or as Bobbi says you can just take the anther off.
