Does anyone do anything to the winter wet out of the lily beds? Last year was bad with all the freeze/thaw cycles. A lot of unneeded moisture in the soil.

Buried in the depths of this forum Lorn @Roosterlorn presented a good description of his method in his Wisconsin lily beds. It was a little complicated with timing and soil temperature measurements and timing the application of mulch.

Hopefully if he sees this he can dredge it up or repeat it. It is not something I would have bookmarked as I don't have that problem where I live.

Connie, about 95% of my lilies are in raised beds. Moisture is usually not a problem. But it is when we get cold enough to freeze the ground solid, then get 2 feet of snow, then temps go to 40° and melts all the snow. Then freezes again and that cycle happened numerous times last year

Lorn gave details on wintering potted lilies in in "raised beds" made especially for that purpose, but I don't remember him talking extensively about in-ground lilies. I could be wrong, though.

I did dig up this:
The thread "Wintering my raised lily bed" in Lilies forum

I did drill large holes on the sides (at the bottom) of my first raised bed box, but I never saw anything of significance seeping out. So I haven't done it since. You could put a tarp over the bed (if your wife would allow), but I don't see the necessity unless you're trying some of the finicky species.
