I planted this bush a few months ago and realized it never came with an ID tag. It's currently about 1 ft tall x 1 ft wide. Please see attached pictures.

The photo identification apps classify it as a type of honeysuckle or euonymus, which could be right, but the leaves are very small (more like a honeysuckle) and slightly different in shape from what I'm used to. I see them around Portland relatively often, so I know they're not rare, and they always seem to have the small leaves (unless I'm not noticing them when they grow up, if they do). I haven't seen it flower yet, but I just planted it this summer.

What do you think?

Apps are saying euonymus because of the variegated leaves, and honeysuckle because they are paired. I think its neither.
Plant it and they will come.

I should be more clear - does anyone have a guess on what the genus might be so I can identify the species?

No, you're clear, it's me who was unclear. Someone else should be along to ID it. Giv it some time. I can see why an app came up with those two things, but an app with human support would probably get it.
I think it is something else the name of which I cannot bring to mind; something common enough but I've never grown it. begins with a C maybe...stiffer stems than wintercreeper Euonymus..
Plant it and they will come.

Could it be a kind of privet? I can't decide whether the leaves are opposite or not.

It is Lonicera nitida variegata...ie a honeysuckle.

Damn, good eye...that's it! I just recently started to get into gardening and wonder how long it will be before I can ID plants like that.

Schooling helps, but though I don't know a lot, I know more than the average Joe, by sheer years of working with plants and reading ID threads and discussion threads- in other words, experience helps greatly. With either technical working through key details, or just recognizing like you would a friend's face.
Plant it and they will come.

I should have known this one because I have it growing in my backyard in a container!

Cotoneaster- I think is what I was trying to think of. Which this is not, because cotoneaster does not have opposite leaves - a major detail to look for in many cases.
Plant it and they will come.

Sorry to be nit picky pardalinum but yours is not the same.
Note the golden variegation.
Yours looks like Lonicera nitida Lemon Beauty.

lee30bmw pics show a shrub with white and green variegation.

First lesson in trying to id plants is to look.
Often I copy a pic from here on id queries to my computer where I can zoom in to clarify details.
Really look. REALLY look...then look AGAIN.

Are the leaves opposite on a twig or alternate.
How large are the leaves.
What colour are the leaves.
The list goes on......

Silversurfer, I did not intend to indicate it was the exact same cultivar, rather it's Lonicera nitida and not some other genus. You are correct though, it is indeed L. nitida Lemon Beauty!
