Crinums are pretty bulletproof here and I love all of mine, from the bog plant spider lilies to the Milk and Honey to the variegated and golden ones to the big red ones. I have a couple really large (almost 6 feet) C. procerum growing around the ponderosa, and one is blooming. I can see it from my window every morning. Cheers me up.

I have that giant crinum. Indeed a favorite and a great attention-getting in the landscape, for sure!

In the winter I wrap it up during our infrequent freezes. I know it will die back and return every winter. But I'm impatient and I dont want to have to wait to see it. So I make the effort. IDK where I got the giant 5 foot coffin-like box, but its "useful trash". I keep it in the garage year after year as it almost fits to cover the giant plant perfectly. With the help of bungee cords old bed sheets, Non-LED Christmas lights and plastic bags to protect from rain, that criumun emerges from its winter protection, like a bad hair day. But within hours back in the sunshine, she springs back happy, and unfazed by winter's cold.

These are the 'Milk and Honey', they have the lily blooms you are thinking of. I believe its a difference of species, the photo above is Crinum procerum, these are Crinum asiaticum I think without looking it up

I have around 10 crinums all of which are the same. Grown from seeds of the mother plant. It has bloomed several times this year and I have a lot more seeds. Sometime this winter I will pot them, get them growing and give them away.

I bring in this big guy every winter. The trunk on it is over a foot tall. The whole plant in it's container is taller than me. I can never seem to get a great photo of it to really show how larger than life it is. It is surely one of my favorites and I agree with Cheryl that it is worth the effort. It has always been rather frugal with flowering and this year it bloomed non stop. I am not sure what I did different but it sure has put on a great show this year

Cheryl, the giant you gave me is potted, I was pondering leaving it outside but now I'm going to place it under the house to go dormant. Next year I must find a place in the ground for this beauty, I want to get it as big as yours.
I have 15 or so crinum and have been growing them about 20 yrs.

How do you guys grow crinium from seed? In the past I've always let the plants just do what they do naturally thinking the plant knows best how to make more little plants but that has been a bust.

@Esperanza ~ that IS BEAUTIFUL! Thank you for sharing the photos. I love the idea that it bloomed throughout this summer and your underplantings are very attractive as well. Oh my aching back if you move that large Crinum in and out each year!

The only Crinum I have with colorful foliage is Menehune and it hasn't shared a bloom yet.

@UncleWill ~ I have never tried seed. Mine produce seed but seem to reproduce best from bulb as they clump.

I have never grown from seed either. They all produce new bulbs, some more than others.

This is one of my giants. The bank of windows behind it are 6 feet from the ground to the roof. It fills the view out of the sunroom window!


This is one of my Crinum xanthosoma, Golden Crinums. I am propagating pots of them at present. They are most yellow in the dead of summer out in full sun. They green up some in less light

@UncleWill I just place them at the base of the mother plant or pot them up to move to a different place. I don't even cover them up, they will send out a root that seeks the ground.

The macowanii does not have daughter plants, it reproduces by seeds only.

With mine the blooms turn into seed pods. I just let them dry out and pot the seeds. Very easy. I get a few offsets but they never do good for me. I don't know why.

I have never noticed seeds on mine...I am going to have to look now! I bought this one years ago, it gets redder in more light, the days are so short here now it is greening a bit...it is canned 'Menehune' and can be grown as an aquatic. I grow it both in water and out. Its never gotten much taller than this a little over 2 feet thin leaves

Gina the crinum that I have that set seeds are the macowanii, bulbispermum, scabrum, pedunculatum and I briefly had an americanum that did. The purple crinum that I got from Cheryl, I got 2 seeds and a daughter plant. I'm still pondering whether hers is a procerum or amabile. I have read descriptions from the Pacific Bulb Society, from the popular seller on ebay and other sources and I'm still divided. I haven't seen the flowers yet but the plant has a flattened base instead of a regular round bulb. Thoughts anyone?

I just trimmed my three huge Crinum clumps way back and spread the love through the neighborhood. A plant friend received a large pup of a plain green-leafed white-bloomed Crinum that had become variegated. Very interesting foliage!
I also have a bunch of offspring of 'Ellen Bosanquet' which I will advertise in the local 'Nextdoor' app. I love sharing plants.
