What kind of tree were they under? What's on the inside of the nut?

You can't have too many viburnums..

Those are nuts from a Hickory - Carya sp.

If you could give some indication of scale - like your hand, or a coin, or a ruler - that would help determine species.

There are half a dozen or more native hickories in eastern North America.

Yes it's hickory nuts. They grow on a big tree. Thank you ViburnumValley. The size of nut is about one inch.
