Here is the purslane Hot Toucan Mix that I started from seeds a few weeks ago.

It is growing very quickly. It has nice thick leaves and it grows very low to the soil.

I think I am going to love this plant.

I will keep updating this thread with this plant's progress as time goes on along.

We just recently had a spell of 118 degree weather, and in the full sun, it was even hotter, and this plant took it all day in the full sun. Amazing!

It sure looks happy and healthy. Please do keep posting photos - can't wait to see it in bloom

The package of seeds only had 25 seeds in it and out of 25 seeds, only 2 sprouted, and unfortunately, both of them produce yellow flowers.

But, I still like them a lot. I like their flat growing profile and their robust, thick leaves. And they taste fine. In fact, I like their taste and especially their texture and mouth feel better than the other purslanes I grow.

I found another supplier of these seeds that sells a much larger number of seeds, and I am going to try them next.

I've sadly not have good results with seeds. It may be me.

Me either. I've scattered them so many times, diff times of the year, diff years, diff spots, from store-bought and saved.

I think I'm just not a seed gal. Maybe I like instant gratification.

Maybe all of these seeds will sprout one day... that would be something!

I really like the foliage on those as well, Jeff. I've only had the needle-leaved ones. Thanks for sharing!

Finally a pinkish bloom opened on this plant, so now it has yellow and pink flowers. Yay!


They're not easy to grow from seed. Only 2 out of 25 seeds sprouted. I used seed starting potting soil (Miracle Gro), and I pre-wet it thoroughly before planting the seeds. I just scattered the seeds on top of the moist soil and put it out in full morning sun. It was also quite hot-- summertime in Phoenix, Arizona. And I watered from the bottom to not disturb the seeds.

Next time I will get more seeds. They only had 25 per seed packet.

So pretty - I have never grown purslane from seed - portulaca yes, but not purslane.

Update:

It has grown longer stems and more leaves, but I had hoped for more flowers than these. Maybe I have been giving them too much nitrogen....

I planted more seeds in a larger pot, so here is the next generation of these plants coming up...
