Starting off this first day of Fall with 48F. Blue Sky and a high in the upper 70's to low 80's. Time to get those last minute plants in the ground and bring the winter squash in from the barn.

They are calling for a high of 82F. Yesterday we had 66% humidity. That is high for here.

So far mostly the temps have run about ten degrees higher than normal most of September here. So officially Fall is here today but it doesn't feel like fall. Okay by me as it means the veggies keep producing because of the warmer weather.

Night times sometimes have been cool, it is a back and forth on the window closings. Too cool at night to keep too many open.

Perfect time to be outside but the mosquitos have already nipped me all over. NO more!

Supposed to be another stinky hot day. It is lovely out there now but by 1:30 I will be moving around the garden with the shade . It is the only way I can continue to get any work done . Looking forward to tomorrow when it is supposed to cool down to a liveable temperature and I can work where I need or want to work.

I did NOT enjoy this summer .....and I am so looking forward to a lovely temperate fall. We get little to no change in color of the trees here . Trees are green and then they are dead and leaves are on the ground so not much to look at in that respect . Farmers fields are turning a poopy yellow color as most grow only corn and soybeans around here ......so we go from green to icky yellow to grey as the weather progresses thru the fall .

Oh how I miss the fall where I grew up in the Laurentians ! The glorious red and orange colors of the hard maples mixed with the green of the evergreens and the muted yellows of the softwood trees.The cool breezes , the smell of the air! There is nothing like it ! Char I will definitely envy you your location over the next 2 months . Here we get the stink and noise of tractors all day and well into the night disturbing what was supposed to be a nice quiet country living and dont get me started on the back up "beep, beep, beep" of the equipment that seems to be almost constant around here and the sound that travels almost a mile from a cow farm across several fields.

On the upside I am still getting the odd daylily blooming and this morning looking outside I see the very first bloom on a Cosmos that appeared in my garden ! Have no clue where it came from . It appeared midway thru the summer and I have been watching it grow and this morning it rewarded me with a pretty white and pink bloom on a plant almost 3 feet tall with dozens more blooms to come . The only hostas still blooming worth looking at are the Lancifolia . My piggies are enjoying the harvesting of the leaves from the daylilies and of course the weeds . What they choose not to eat they move around into piles and sleep in them .

Waiting on the daylily Alberene to put out its maiden bloom this season . Not sure why it has taken this long to show up but I will take what I can get .

Our fall color is yellow. Between the chamisa, the cotton woods, and the aspen, it's yellow. Here is the view from my wife's sink (I've got my own sink but that's a whole nother story.)



And the aspen are just getting started!

I am looking forward to Vermont's fall colors as well Char! However, the only way I will see them is if you post lots and lots of photos of the colors. (pretty please)

We had frost last night, today has been nice, mostly sunny, 60f degrees, not much wind.

Another gorgeous day of sun, low 80's and low humidity. Kept busy outside all day getting odd things done.

What a pretty view from the sink window! I'm not sure how colorful the foliage will be this year after it being so dry, but Cy and I will definitely drive around and do some leaf peepin for everyone. It's a great time to visit Vt....hint hint...

Talking about peepin...I'm planning on going over to the Dartmouth College greenhouse this weekend, their Amorphophallus titanum is going to bloom! I grow a few of the morpho's and can't wait to see it. Here's a link to their live greenhouse cam ....

High 80's and 90's all week thru Sat... Maybe some relief on Sunday- down to 70. Nights are still too hot! But I do have rebloom scapes on a little NOID, so it's not all bad. The weather is also forcing me to water the new bed every day, which means lots of time hanging out in the gardens- way better than being in the house! I'm not an indoorsy kinda person.

We have a couple of maples at the end of the field and they're a lovely red in the fall.... Grandpa Walnut (a black walnut about 180 years old according to my hubby) turns first and drops his bright yellow leaves all at once it seems and the pin oaks that I love for their shade pays me back with enough acorns to feed a large army of squirrels. It also makes walking barefoot impossible and it drops it's leaves all freaking winter. The kids make a killing at fall clean up time- the one chore I will payyyyy to keep from having to do! Truly a love-hate relationship with those trees. But they're huge, established shade trees and there's no way I can part with the shade they provide. And where would I put my tree swing?!

Got a bunch of caterpillars hanging around this year- and tons of Monarchs on my zinnias. Third year of having a good patch of milkweed. Have tons of seed pods and leftover seed from this spring.

Got .03" of rain late this afternoon but then some fall colors that weren't just yellow.

They are picking corn and soybeans here already. Usually we do have a lot of fall color. Once in a while it doesn't happen. Luckily we go to shades of browns.
I live next to a grain elevator. Thankfully they put in quieter blowers a few years ago.
I love bird drop blooms. That's where my petunias came from.

I had a smaller Amorphophallus and all was well when it just had umbrella folaige. Then one year in winter it decided to bloom. Gorgeous red cinnamon and a smell of deatth that would choke a horse. It had to go all the way outside. My morph was no more.

Me neither, but the mosquitoes forced my hand this year. I used the dryer all summer. I never do that unless it's rained.
Our walnuts start dropping yellow leaves in July and one tree is almost bare while the other two are now dropping theirs. The walnuts are dropping like crazy too. I envy your maples. Pin oaks have the most beautiful structure. A tree to lay under and enjoy. I woul not like the acorns underfoot tho.
At least someone had caterpillars this year.

Looks like another beautiful day here today. I just hope it is a bit cooler than yesterday. Need to do some major weeding.

A cold front moved thru Tucson a couple hours ago bringing with it strong breezes and .05 of light rain. The temp on the patio dived to 70 F and DH put on a second shirt as I had all the doors and windows open. The air was crisp and delicious! I remained in my shorts and tee-shirt.

However, the clouds have moved on and the sun is out and the temp is steadily going up . It was a nice couple of hours, however.

Rained here most of the day, just starting to clear up now, windy and temperature is only 47f degrees.

Woke to rain this morning, temp around 61F. The sun did come out for a half hour or so and the temp went up. Then more clouds, the wind picked up and the temp started dropping, It's 55F and cloudy now...dark too! Seems every night I have to go out 5 mins earlier than the night before to put the chickens to bed.

Sally, I lock mine up in the spare bedroom when they first open for a day or two. Then the smell isn't so bad. I just have to make sure there is nothing in the room I will want for those days or it is a mad dash in and out again. The morpho's are so worth a few days of smell, the blooms are fascinating and the foliage beautiful. Mine will need to be moved inside to give them a chance to die back. Then I'll dig out the bulbs and store them til spring. Check out the video, Morphy opened!

Really enjoy seeing the images being added to this thread. I saw only one monarch last year...none this year. We used to see hundreds.

I had no extra room and the stench was gagging. It had to go. I hated to do it but had no choice. If it had waited till summer to bloom all would have been well.

It finally rained yesterday morning and we got just under half an inch.

Cool, cloudy, and a little breeze. Perfect weather to work outdoors.
