Does anyone here grow gaillardia? Are they long lived plants or only last a few years? What do you think of the named varieties that are on the market?

I have grown them and never found them to be long lived. Some folks have, but for me, they are a one shot wonder.

I have had luck direct seeding them, and sometimes they will return the following year, but that is generally the end of it.

As to varieties, this one is Goblin, seeded last year, which bloomed this month

Hi there! I grow Gaillardias in containers, started in April 2011 as seedlings I bought at QVC. I grow Arizona Red Shades, Arizona Sun and Mesa Yellow. So far from what I have seen, as seedlings they require adequate watering on fast draining soil. As they continue to mature, they would prefer to dry out before you water again. Our weather is mostly drier and our winters are normally cool and wet, we do not have snow here. They really love full sun and continued on blooming all year long, though I think since it is in containers not as profuse as those I see growing on the ground. I was away almost whole summer of 2011, so I do not have much summertime photos last year.

The blooms are bigger and faster coming out when it is warmer, though they will continue blooming during colder season, but a bit smaller. So this would be my 2nd year with them, and so far, they are growing well, especially more by summertime. I deadhead the blooms once it is finished, since there is almost always another bloom at the lower part of the bloom stalk waiting to bloom.

Here is how they look like when I got them:

Of the three types, Arizona Sun and Mesa Yellow are much more active growers. Arizona Red Shades seems more active when it is the height of summer.

I have not had luck with Gallardia returning. Bought Arizona Red Shades last year and it didn't come back. Used to have another variety (forget which one) and a little bit came back the second year, but then the third year it didn't.

I do love it though Smiling

They're short lived for me- 2 or 3 years. The good news is they reseed and the ones I've grown have flowered the first year from seed. This year's drought has been the exception to the rule. My wintersown ones this year are alive but haven't bloomed yet.

They are not reliably hardy here.
I am trying one labelled as "Burgundy" which is actually colored red and yellow.

I had Goblin a few years ago and it never over wintered...so I thought: out of the blue it appeared this year. Hilarious!
I guess we had a mild winter and it was still there. weird

I've had Goblin and it has overwintered for about 3 years, so far. Why not go out and find some wild ones..not quite as showy but still attractive and definitely hardy.

I am fond of them, and have no luck with them. Think it is my clay soil--they don't like it at all.
It’s okay to not know all the answers.

I am surprised, I have gaillardia reseeding all the time but not the newer varieties. Arizona red shades one year only. Fanfare, Goblin, regular and Tokajar all came back several years and reseeded.

Welcome Arlene! AKA Mom! Glad you found the site I told you about!

Welcome!

I have one Arizona dwarf that i have had for 5 years! Even survived two moves!! But that is my longest living Gaillardia. Two years is usually the longest they live. But they reseed plenty for me so I am never without. This year I will formally collect seeds and wintersow them next year.

Mine are always short lived, probably due to winter wet clay.

The results I've had with gaillardia here haven't been worth repeating. I'm sorely tempted by pictures of Mesa Yellow, among others, but the plants just don't like it here. If I were to grow these again, I'd use them as container plants.

Welcome! to ATP, Arlene!

That's sad, I love my sunny Gaillardias! Thanks, Jen (AKA daughter) for introducing me to this site. I used to have Gaillardia that would reseed on each side of my front steps. They got kind of tall and I was always tempted to pull them out because they were so messy but they are just so cheerful. So far they are doing okay down here in GA. I started several new varieties this year from seed so we'll see.
