I went to the Newport Harbor Orchid Society sponsered show today, and managed to get out with only 5 plants. I was able to spend a good 1/2 hr with Kathrin, from Andy's, and she gave me some really good tips on what and how to grow orchids outside here. Seems she has very similar conditions. That is why I prefer to buy at shows.
Anyway, here's a group shot...Thumb of 2011-01-29/ctcarol/1e4b0c

From Andy's Orchids. Coelogyne mooreana (not in bloom), and Maxillaria curtipis Thumb of 2011-01-29/ctcarol/6199ae

From Orchids of Los Osos Phaph.wendbourn x Rosy Dawn Thumb of 2011-01-29/ctcarol/89f1b3
and a NOID Paph (he told me the name but I didn't write it down)Thumb of 2011-01-29/ctcarol/f36346

And from Sunset Valley Orchids. L. Gold star SVO x L. gold star 'neon yellow'

I was assured all these will thrive outside here...Thumb of 2011-01-29/ctcarol/af9c35

I just bought a Neostylis Pinky 'Starry Night' on ebay. It has pink spots and fragrance but it's not full size yet. Just noticed that Ursula got the same one at Silva! Is yours blooming size?

Nice haul Carol. I agree with you about buying at shows from the people that grow them. It's also great if they're growing in the same conditions as you.

Bill, yes - I do prefer to buy at shows /open house. It is simply fun. I make some exceptions, I don't think I ever got a bad plant from Andy's Orchids ordering from their website.
Carol, looking good!! I like Katrin! Talking to her a few years ago, I realized she comes from the region of Germany I grew up in. ( same dialect) And of course - she knows her plants! Thumbs up
Kathy, I got the Neostylis actually from the Cal - Orchid table and size-wise - have a look at my loot picture. They are not huge, I will see if they are blooming size already. But they are very nice sturdy plants.

I know with Neostylis orchids, they don't need to be very big to bloom. That's why I'm hardly ever discouraged by size with them.

There was a vendor at this show that had all kinds of Neostylis. First time I've seen them around here, and didn't even check the name of the vendor. I think every vendor there had Paphs this year, and that's very unusual. Now I can't wait to see who shows up at the Spring Garden Show in April. Big Grin

Thanks Ursula, I can't wait to get them..most of them are 2 for 1 specials. In 2" pots
and ready to move up, so it will be many years before we see any blooms from this
group.I noticed today that several of my plants that I got earlier in the summer now
have buds (too small to photograph) but I am encouraged that I am doing something
right... with the Catt family anyway Hilarious!
