I went to J & L Orchids in Easton, CT (north of Bridgeport) today for their open greenhouse sale (20% off). The sale is Jan 22-31, 9AM-4PM. I haven't been there for 2 years and they really had lots of great stuff. Mostly unusual plants and intermediates. I must have been wearing more than my usual buying shoes (at least one pair and maybe one on my hand) because I bought 13 plants! What fun!!
Here's Marguerite Webb and a helper doing my checkout. And Mercy the pup!

They did a great job plowing the parking lot and the path to the greenhouse.

As you can see I met lots of orchid hounds and told several people to come visit us here.
Here are some overview pics.

And some individual plants. I bought plants of the first three. Masd. prodigiosa, Masd. 'Elle', and a Den. kingianum hybrid.

I also picked up Elle. Along with the wurdackii we talked about, Taku Candy(sp?) and Angel Fling. I have 1 other Masdy(Angel Heart) that I got about 6 mos ago. I haven't killed it yet(or flowered it either). We'll see how it goes. Their requirements seem similar to phals as far as lighting and my temps are 75 days, 60 nights.

Bill, I'm growing my wurdackii cool (min 50 degrees) so we can compare results. If I remember not to overwater that is...

They are still open, Ursula!! If not, maybe we could meet there and find a place to do Pho afterwards! And meet Bill, too!! BTW, I thought I was going for cool growers but most of the ones I chose were intermediate temp plants which I'm sure you could place by your back windows.

In spite of the bitter cold, J & L was (as always) very enjoyable.

Got:
Haraella retrocalla.
Dendrobium unicum
Vandirea Newberry
Coelogyne ochracea
Jumellea comorense

All except the Dendrobium are nicely fragrant, especially the Coelogyne.

I'm looking forward to the June sale. Calorchid usually has some amazing things.

Currently in flower (orchids and otherwise)

Hippeastrum 'Elvas'
Coelogyne Memoria Louis Forget 'Surprise'
Dendrobium Fancy Angel 'Lycee'
Sinningia Super Orange (and two more varieties, whose names I can't remember).
Goodaleara (The cross of Oncidium ornithorhynchum x Beallara Vashon).

I got the Vandirea too and mounted it. Hope that works chez moi. My Den unicum has begun to return from the dead-hope it blooms this year. Is there a sale at J & L in June? I'd love to buy from Cal Orchids. Ursula gets great stuff from them. Thumbs up
