Just back from the orchid club meeting with two new babies, both won in a drawing. It was $5 for 3 tickets and I won two orchids. Not bad.

Epc. Mem. Young C. Lott is a small plant but in bloom. I had eyed it from afar and when I had the first number called, I pounced on it. Check out the lip.

The second one is Ada. Keiliana X Odm. triumphans which I think is an Odontoglossum. Not being sure what it is prompted me to get it. It's in spike so I'll know soon.

I love that cool tiered lip, too Jim. Nice choice on your raffle!

I was at Lowe's doing a monthly help desk, and of course could not pass by the death rack where they shove all the orchids that have finished blooming. They mark them down to 50% to 75% off generally. Usually there are only very sick looking Phals but today . . . check out what I scored! Did a classic double-take when I saw the shape of the one little spent flower on this - it is a Bl. Yellow Bird!

Other one is a nice perky little Phal that was in a rather nice square glass vase with no drainage whatsoever. To my surprise when I got it home and extracted all the packed sphagnum, it has a mass of healthy looking roots, so the prognosis is good for that one, too. Now to decide who gets the pretty little red hole-y pot . . . ??

We managed to pick up some interesting Orchids today at the Deep Cut OS Show, although the tables looked today at the last few hours of the show, a bit sparse....

Pleurothallis niveoglobula
Macroclinium manabinum
Embreea rodigasiana
Miltonia phymatochila

Those are some very nice orchids, Ursula. With all of that snow, I was afraid the show would be a bust. Lots of folks braving the elements up there.

Jim, it really was not a problem getting there. I was already tempted driving down yesterday, but it was bit too late. Everything was well plowed.

Woo hoo, I scored!! Lovely big multi-spiked Cymbidiums at Costco for $22! I tried very hard to not be greedy and to just pick one, but two of the little devils managed to come home with me. Neither of them seems to have a name tag, just "Cymbidium Care". Maybe when I go to re-pot them I'll find a tag down in the pot.

It's dark outside so I can't get good pictures, but I did take shots of the display at the store. The one on the far right in the first pic was the second rascal that wooed me with its gorgeous huge flowers after I'd already chosen a big one with buds all still closed, and 3 spikes. I think the first one will be bright yellow with red spotting on the lip, and the other is pale yellow/green with white lip and a small fuschia edging at the end of the lip. I may have to back and get a couple more, they're so nice. Seem to be very high quality plants for a big box store.

Here they are in the light of day. The larger one is busting out of its pot with huge fat pb's. Little one has flowers 4in. across. I am thrilled.

Carol, thanks for alerting me to watch for cyms at Costco. Not where you'd expect to find high quality orchids, for sure.

Elaine, I've been very impressed with the orchids that Costco carries for the last couple of years. They never have names, but who cares? Now if they would offer something besides Cyms and Phals I'd be in hog heaven. I wonder what they do with the ones that are past their prime.

Very nice choices, Elaine. I wish there was a Cosco close to my house but they are few and far between around here.

I'm just back from the orchid club meeting fresh with a 'Member's Choice' ribbon and five new babies for the OC. The first one to grab my attention was Epi. stamfordiaqnum, a species and in spike, See http://www.orchidspecies.com/e... for a picture.

The second is Bulb. Doris Dukes 'Joe'. Doris is the wife of Bill Thoms and they were both at the meeting. I couldn't find the 'Joe' variation picture but here is Bulb Doris Dukes: http://www.clanorchids.com/pag...

The third one is Encyclia Lee Ward (adenocaula X tampensis V. semi-alba). See http://www.stpeteorchidfarm.co... ninth row down.

The fourth one is Lc. Eva and is it ever in flower. It is C. aurantiaca X L. cinnabarina 'poppy'.

The last one is an old time Cattleya species, C. skinneri, in spike. See http://www.orchidspecies.com/c... I have always liked this orchid.

I'll make that unanimous. All wonderful but Lc. Eva is the star! Of course I am partial to those bright reds/oranges to begin with. What a bloomer!
