If it produces offsets would they be fasciated also? I'm not sure how old this rosette is, as it came in a pot filled with rosettes. All the other ones have normal centers.

I think it will likely be up to the genetics of the rosette and cause of the cresting. Some crests may be stable, some not. Some may not even be able to produce offsets. Since you do not know the age and since it looks old, you will have to make a decision. Do you physically divide it to propagate or do you wait and try for offsets, knowing it may bloom and die, losing the crested form?

If it was me, and I had some confidence that I could give it the care necessary to keep the pieces alive, I would divide it using the vertical division technique and some tlc. Once I had a couple of crested pieces going, I would then watch to see if any of them could produce offsets. I'd let some mature as long as it takes but continue to divide others (after recovery and growth, of course) to propagate the plant. I think you need some intervention to get past the "I only have just this one crested form" stage. Then when you have multiple plants, you could do some experimentation.

It's interesting to come back to the Fame Monstrose a bit. While this is not a crest, it is an unusual form. The original Fame Monstrose I have is now in its second generation of offsets. I don't know how old the original is that I have, but it has not bloomed so far. It has produced at least two generations of offsets. That's what makes them so interesting (the unusual ones) is that the rules may be different for each one.

I have sister rosettes to this O. spinosa, but not sure I can gather my courage to do surgery. If I do the surgery should I cut it in half and the halves in half?

I would clean and dry the plant so roots are visible, then only divide into two (equal) pieces, making sure each piece had roots. Then dry a day or two and plant. Give daily attention. I haven't tried this with the Oro's, so its a bit of an experiment. Don't know any reason it shouldn't work, as they are close relatives. Maybe try with a sister rosette and if no problems in a few weeks, do the crested one. but don't wait too long as winter will soon be with us. Glare

Your concerns are legitimate, but this is also why I advocate practicing the surgery/division skills before you need them.

Boromir crested form, Just bought this year.
Jim says he has found that it can tend to want to go back to the normal form. He has found a extra bit of nitrogen keeps them in this form.

Does he have any more for sale? The second pic tells me its crested. The first pic really had me going because of its unusual symmetric appearance, but the 2nd pic shows me that was artful perspective. Very, very nice.

Very interesting Sherri. Where did it come from?

It came from Jim at the Sunday market. His farm is Phocas Farms, north of here in Sequim where they really do get sun. I keep harping that he needs to come on here, teach us some stuff and sell on line. So far no luck. By August they generally don't have room for him at the market ..... I am going to have to learn to drive to Port Townsend!
I did ask if he had more today, but they were all out. I'll keep looking. It looks an awful lot the one on ebay they wanted 35 dollars for!

Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could figure out what makes the rosettes crest or fasciate?
Sequim has perfect weather for growing this type of plant. Would love to go to his place.
