Knock Out Roses Look Fabulous in Pots

By LarryR
May 30, 2012

In the past several years, the Knock Out series of roses has enjoyed great popularity among gardeners. These roses grow well under all kinds of garden conditions, but did you know that they do well in pots too?

OK, after much searching, I found William Radler's address on a patent website. I had hoped to find his email address, but had no luck with that. I'll send him a letter, and we'll see if he responds.

William Radler actually responded! Below is his letter. As you'll see, he does not commit to producing a more fragrant KnockOut. He cites his yellow KnockOut as being fragrant. Some people can detect a faint fragrance, but I can't at the moment. I was amazed at the number and types of roses he's developed, especially since his operation is so small. I'm surprised that some large rose hybridizer hasn't snapped him up.

My yellow knock out is very fragrant. Smells just like a "real" rose Green Grin!

Thanks for the follow-up Larry Thumbs up

I don't know if it's the roses or the noses! Hilarious! I have a David Austin "Janet" that everyone says is a fragrant variety. My definition of fragrant is that I can smell roses when I walk past them on a warm day. Smiling If I totally bury my nose in Janet, I can detect a faint scent.
Confidence is that feeling you have right before you do something really stupid.

My yellow knockout smells nothing like a hybrid tea rose. Not even close.

Thanks for posting Radler's reply, Larry.

I've grown every Knock Out he has listed except the Rainbow. And have also grown the Carefree Sunshine as well.

"I'm surprised that some large rose hybridizer hasn't snapped him up."

Well, actually, Conard-Pyle seems to handle the patents on all of Radler's roses so in a way they have snatched him up. I used to be able to get rooted cuttings of the Knock Outs but a couple years ago C-Pyle quit letting "small businesses" like me purchase them, much preferring the mega-stores and garden centers (Home Depot/Lowes, etc). It sure is a disappointment to me and quite a few of my friends/customers.

Again, thanks for posting the follow-up to your William Radler letter.

How nice of him to respond! I wonder if it depends on the soil they're planted in...interesting mystery!

Thanks for your comments, y'all. I think to a great degree it's the noses. I just happen to be researching an article for our local paper on fragrance in flowers. I'll publish it on cubits as well when it's done. There seems to be a male/female thing when it comes to perceiving aromas.
