Those Rodriguezias are just lovely. In Ursula's close-up shot of the flower above, it really reminds me of my little Howeara Lava Burst 'Puanani' AM/AOS with the cute little hooded flowers. I'm recalling that they are related?

I liked it so well I bought four plants (they're small . .) Right now three of them are ready to pop blooms. One has 3 spikes! This is a shot from earlier in the spring, when the first one came home from the orphanage with me.

This is either a picture of my old house slippers or new blooms on Bulb. frostii. It's impossible to tell by the smell. Hilarious!

This Encyclia is part of my mixed Encyclia basket which I had picked up some years ago as "Chocolate scented Enc tampensis". The basket has a bunch of spikes coming along, this one is probably something along the lines of Enc plicata with some (chocolate scented ) phoenicea thrown into the mix. It smells delicious!

Stanhopea embreei opened two nicely scented blooms today. 1. pic taken in the morning, 2. pic taken in afternoon sun. The plant hangs high under the Japanese Maple.

Sorry, I've been in the panic mode for the last couple of days. I received a call from a reporter for the Tampa Bay Times saying they want to come out to the house and do a story on the garden featuring palms. So, I have been out in the heat trimming, mowing and raking and I think I am about ready. I'll let you know when the article is published. My little garden surely gets its share of attention around here.

I am also pouting because your Stanhopea is blooming beautifully up there on the tundra and all 7 of mine are hanging in the OC without a hint of a spike. Needless to say I love it. Also very nice Morning Glory. The form is what makes it so special to me. Great Encyclia and the fragrance is a bonus.

Bree, I love seeing your slippers. Keep posting.

Hello, sorry to be absent, your lovelies above are a treat. The Stanhopias are gorgeous, but I thought they all smelled like corpses or stinky feet? Think I am now on a quest for a chocolate-scented Encyclia, being such a chocoholic. Friday is "dunk day" for my orchids, they all get a dunk in rainwater to flush the salts and thoroughly water them, so I was busy this morning.

I just returned from what will sadly be my last visit to the orchid orphanage. It had to come. They found a buyer for all the rest of the orchids, so I am happy for them. But I had hoped to pick up a couple more that I saw last week and didn't buy. Shoulda woulda coulda . . I got many beauties for little money from them.

Oh well, I did get a pretty little blue-ish NoID dendrobium, half price at Home Depot last night, so I'll have to be happy with that. For now. It's a nice healthy plant, and the flowers are more blue than the picture shows. They had a sign beside their whole orchid display (sitting outside in the 90deg. heat - but in shade) saying "Easy care Orchids, 3 ice cubes once a week". Their customers will be killing all those poor Phals, Dens and a few spidery flowered ones I didn't recognize (no tags on anything) even faster now, I'd think!

Ursula, I love your Encyclia!...and what a beautiful photo as well!
Elaine, I work at several Lowe's stores ( a vendor for the plant growers) and
I have to say, that I've been tempted to remove those tags on several occasions!
But then I think about all the Dendrobians I've killed and am beginning to wonder
if maybe I need to revisit the ice cube concept..at least as far as Dens are concerned! Whistling

Thanks.
Elaine, Stanhopea blooms are very short lived, mostly only 3 days, so they really "put out" ! The buds all open at the same time and many times you can smell them the night before opening. I have never, ever come across a nasty smell on any of them, I find the opposite is true, they smell great! Stanhopea wardii blooms are strongly and most wonderfully scented! This embreei smells somewhat fruity and very very pleasant.
Perhaps you were thinking of some of the Bulbos? And even those are not all evil stinkers.

If you want a chocolate scented Encyclia, look for Enc phoenicea!

About these ice cubes! What utter nonsense. Who ever started that garbage should be shot.

I repotted/cleaned up some of my Neofinetias. Here is one simply wedged into a rough clay-pot, with some Coconut fiber to hold the plant in place. Roots will usually attach to the pot in a couple of weeks.

Neofinetia falcata Iyonishiki seems to"morph" into a plainer variety. Newer leaves are more greenish.

Octomeria grandiflora has a lot of buds. The small, cute blooms don't last too long, so I don't expect to get a show with a bunch of blooms open at the same time.
