A few updated pictures which I took about a week ago. I've since yanked the overgrown, ratty-looking balsam. And the pot of purple monarda fried, and is now compost food.

My garden is a royal mess this year. It has been too hot to do any maintenance. The coleus really look better than anything else. But it does have the advantage of several hours of shade from the tree in the hottest part of the afternoon.

The coleus are looking great. Very pretty even with all the heat.

Thank you. Because that's the front of the house, I've really worked hard at keeping it well watered in this heat and drought. The back yard doesn't look too good. Sad Except for the crepe myrtle, which is beautiful.

considering your summer conditions.. they look fantastic!! Hurray! even the verbena I have in containers didn't do great this year .. I am still jealous you can grow coleus in the ground.. and they get so huge.. with the slugs here.. they wouldn't stand a chance.. been killing tons everyday.. so annoying!!

Slugs like wet conditions. We have NOT had wet! Everything is dry, drier, dryest! Some of the coleus have dried out and lost some leaves. But they grow new leaves and recover quickly. Not so with most of my other plants.

Worms like moist soil, too. In early spring, the uppermost layers of my soil are nice and moist and crawling with worms. Now, you can't find a drop of water anywhere but in the birdbath. And you'd have to dig deep to find worms.

All my containers have fried this year, except petunias.

Your front bed is looking good. Did I see a few Dragon Wing Begonias in there? The zinnias are really pretty. A friend of mine give me some of those, love the hot colors.
