I purchased this at a place that sells plants for bonsai use. It is labeled "Stinky Maple" and is indeed very smelly when rubbed. They had a number of gallon containers marked down half price because they weren't selling. First photo is whole plant and second is closeup of leaves.

It looks like that may be it. A quick look around the net shows it to be popular for bonsai. I would note that I don't smell anything if i don't rub it (unless I touch my nose on it in the process!)
