Very lovely, Michele. We may all get some surprises
with the increased sweat bee population. Just saw
three scapes on seedlings planted this spring. About
9 months old.

Michele, do you use shade cloth to protect plants
from very high temps? Do they survive triple digits
without some type of protection?

At my old place my hybridizing daylilies were under shade cloth last year but the other daylilies in the garden were in full sun all day. This year the shade cloth never got put up so everything is in full sun. We haven't gotten hotter than around 96 or so this year but last year was awful, can't remember the temps but it was triple digits. The daylilies do just fine in these temps as long as they get adequate water, we water every day. Toward Septemper the foliage may get a little brown on the tips, but nothing major. We do have some that will go into summer dormancy when it gets super hot, but they come back when it cools down.

Thank you so much, Michele. That makes me feel a bit
better. Starting tomorrow, I am going to water morning
and evening. In these triple digits, the soil dries so out
so quickly.

Question?

Is the Stigma in three sections? If so, does pollen have to get into each section for the cross to take? If this is true, could you put more than one pollen one a stigma? Now, I'm really thinking out in left field, that's me folks, I think too much Whistling

I just went to the AHS and looked at their description. They have a picture of the microscope view of the stigmatic hairs on a stigma that accept the pollen. I had no idea, not a clue about this!!!!! Very interesting but this brings about more questions??? Do the hairs pull the pollen into each section or is this done at one instance and doesn't matter where the pollen is put on the stigma?? I'm sure I have more questions but I'm so darned tired and thats "tie--ard" that I'm not getting anymore at this time. But I'd bet when I get answeres, I'll have more questions Green Grin!

fFrom what I have seen looking at a pistil, it appears to be in 3 sections to it.
Honestly I have no clue. I would imagine the hairs help hold the pollen in place for the stigmatic fluid or help it move down the style. You could put more than one pollen on a stigma, but why would you want to. I would imagine the first pollen that was dabbed would be the pollen that gets in and makes it to the ovary. If more than one pollen did actually get to the ovary you wouldn't have a clue as to which seeds each pollen went to. Too much confusion there.
I have heard of a person that would mix all of the pollen from lots of daylilies and pollinate with the mixture. AGAIN, you have no clue as to who the pollen parent actually is.
