Any thoughts on this one? I think this plant: African Mask (Alocasia 'Polly') should be listed as:

Alocasia Amazonica Poly.

My first plant years ago was labeled Alocasia Amazonica 'Poly' and then I saw one at another nursery a few years later with a label that read: Alocasia x amazonica 'Polly" which was confusing. The late Steve Lucas of Exotic Rainforest : http://www.exoticrainforest.co... (who was very knowledgeable when it came to Aroids) said that A. Amazonica 'Poly' was the correct name.

So since he says the "name is not scientific but is instead a horticultural common name", sounds like it just needs the species section cleared and the Alocasia Amazonica added to the common name field, leaving in the cultivar name as is.

Actually, Alocasia amazonica is not listed in ITIS, ThePlantList.org, TROPICOS, WCPR.

Alocasia x amazonica is listed as an invalid synonym of Alocasia x mortfontanensis André, Rev. Hort. 63: 174 (1891) which itself is under review and an unplaced name.

The originial publication details list it as an "artificial hybrid or cultivar" of A. longiloba × A. sanderiana.

I think your best bet is to list it simply as Alocasia hybrid 'Poly'; Then as Sue suggests. list all the common names such as A. x amazonica and A. amazonica, as well as the cultivar "Polly" - since it's being sold under all those names. Then move any photos or details from the incorrect entries and delete the plant listings for A amazonica and A. x amazonica since they don't exist botanically.

LOL ... I will let the experts sort it all out. I'm just a novice and it gets very confusing to me.

No expert here, but it's somewhat unraveled. Your plant is now in the approval queue as Alocasia x 'Poly', with a whole bunch of common names and synonyms referring to amazonica and 'Polly'. The other entry of Alocasia amazonica is deleted. Whew.

OK, check my work, I made the changes. I just left out the A. x amazonica since it's not an official scientific name, if it was, it would have gone into the Synonyms section.

OK, now I don't see any of the other synonyms listed as Monica mentioned. I didn't remove anything other than the
x amazonica in the species section and I added the Alocasia Amazonica to the common name. Did I mess something up?

I give up and will retreat from this thread quietly.

Sue's proposal came AFTER I approved Monica's proposal. This is an unfortunate occurrence that can't easily be avoided.

I pulled our Monica's previously approved proposal and resubmitted it, so all the synonyms are now present.
