Michele, Kim, James and I made the annual trip yesterday about a month later than last year, still had some nice things to look at. All are seedlings and have no idea of parentage of most.

Here is his seedling compost pile. He had his helpers tossing everthing in the greenhouse and under the shade cloth that he isn't keeping onto the pile

Wow, I just can't imagine tossing that many seedlings away but I guess when you grow thousands, its inevitable that some have to go.

Larry will be the first to tell you that daylilies look a lot different in the greenhouse than they do outside, they are also 5-6 inches taller inside. From the 5000 seedlings planted each year only 6 or 7 make it to introduction, the rest go into the big pile out back, except for a few he sells or gives to customers.

Wow, what fantastic daylilies! I totally love the last two in the first batch, and also the skinny Minnie in the second! And I agree -- that's a REALLY tall daylily! Are those DR. STUMP seedlings?

The ones that look like Doctor Stump are seedlings from it.

Thanks, Fred. You're getting some really toothy seedlings now, too, aren't you?

If I had to take my plants and throw them into a compost pile like that, I'd just totally lose it!! I understand, I've heard all the compelling reason for doing it, but I could NEVER do it. I would have to leave and have someone send all of them to the local community compost pile where I couldn't see them laying there like that. I would think of all the hundreds of hours spent getting them to grow and look so beautiful and don't forget all the money spent on them, and them throw them away!! Not me!

Betty I have a few, but teeth is not something I hybridize a lot for, there are so many now and it's an area where I have little interest. I wasn't looking for teeth when LILLIAN'S FIRST BITE came along, it just happened. I am happy to enjoy Larry's and the others toothy things.

Mona you poor dear, if only you knew your time is coming when you will be glad to compost those dogs.
