belaschich, I also add the name of the vendor, temp., water. and light needs, and when repotted. Makes it easier when it's time to move them in/out, and find them the best spot.

I do best with a list of names with water, temp, light and special instructions, sometimes parents. I gave up on vendors at some point.
Sometime when you come over I can show you my list, OrchidWiz, and the plants. Hybridizers name the orchids and there is method to their madness. (Then the botanists rename them so we are totally confused. Rolling on the floor laughing ) (Shhhhh. Don't tell Jo yet!)

So, so, so, much to learn! Light has been my obsession this week. I am wondering how to tell when my plants are getting just the right amount.

I have not posted much but have been taking all the advice about cataloging my small collection. Thanks for your help! You are all so very generous with your time and knowledge. I am happy to say that after about three versions, I have finally settled on a "system" that includes most of what you have all told me. You have no idea how helpful your suggestions were.

Carol, repotting was a good one (when it was last done and how often it is recommended). I was surprised how much It varies depending on the plant type. I know that I will need to explore the whole issue of mediums, but that will wait until I actually have to repot.

Right now figuring out names, tribes, parents, subtribes, species and all the new vocabulary, and the concepts (especially in the categorizations) has my head spinning. Now I know what some of the kids I work with feel like.

Kathy, I would love to see OrchidWiz as well as your plants. Lets make a plan for that.

re light -
I am wondering how to tell when my plants are getting just the right amount.

After a while you will realize that for a/that particular orchids the color of the leaves is THE perfect shade of green.
Leaves which are supposed to be on the plant, are not shriveled. (in contrast - many Dendrobiums lose their leaves, that is normal)
Leaves are not burned.
Leaves are not falling off due to rot /kept too shady.
The plant is blooming happily.
Surely there is more to add here....

I will Kathy. Thanks Ursula and Lindsey. I was just starting to notice the differences in some Phal leaves that I have in different areas. I saw several at the Nutmeg Orchid Society show, so now have a better sense of what that perfect green is, and have made some adjustments.
