I was visiting a couple of ladies gardening in Brooklyn the other day and thought I'd show some of their approaches to containers...
They run a garden supply business in a small factory/garage building called Hayseed .. where they sell tools and other garden supplies.. around the space they have an assortment of things growing.. I brought 3 flats of plants [ my volunteers ] by for their plant exchange.. and got to see what they had done..
along with their garage they have the parking lot next door.. a parking lot for decades and regraveled many times... it was a difficult place to grow anything... but through a series of container applications they have quite a garden beginning... this is their first year... it should only get better ..
first is the hanging skid planters.. they removed every other board of the skid.. and looped some fabric through for planting.. and the plants grow out in the space of the removed boards.. these hang on a fence..Thumb of 2012-06-11/GordonHawk/14e087
another skid planter is a skid laying down on the ground... and the skid used to contain the soil.. with plants growing out through the slats

there's an assortment of can and bag planters.. the burlap will soon rot away... but they just lift it and put it in a new bag when this starts to happen.. the first bag composting into the soil of the new bag

another is a raised bed large container.. and I guess their signature piece as the business is called hay seed..
a series of hay bales containing the soil and forming their container

they also have a series of the tire planters there...

one of the girls lives in the back of the garage.. and does her other art and event planning there.. right near her garden... go girls.. just life in the big city

I've seen the hay bales around soil before. Looks like the corn is doing great.

Gordon it is difficult to see detail on the photo. Are you downsizing the photo before downloading to the thread? The system here at ATP will downsize for you, then when we click to enlarge the photo we will get a larger photo.

I love the blue, wish I could see it better, I just know there are all kinds of ideas just waiting in that photo. Lovey dubby
