Hi Lois, I have just joined and would like to know what you used to plant the succulents in? Your bird cage looks great and I have 2 cages I would love to do the same thing. Thank you. Rhonda
Lois doesn't seem to be around lately, but she did post a bit of her technique much earlier in this thread. You can see it here: http://garden.org/thread/view_...
Confidence is that feeling you have right before you do something really stupid.
Hello Rhonda, welcome to ATP!! I love this birdcage idea...may have to try this! Please post photos if you do make this project I'd love to see them!
Cheers
I have not done much with succulents except for some hen and chicks that I brought home that were my DH's uncles. I have 2 old bird cages and several metal baskets in different styles that I would like to put succulents in. The baskets are a bunny shape, a rooster shape, a goose shape, and just some basket shapes. I am in Zone 4 so not sure if they will be able to be left out over winter. Will they survive if I bring them in to a 50 degree area and not water them over winter or will they require water and light if brought inside? I do not have good windows for natural light. I will edit with a picture of my hen and chicks later.
The sempervivum should be alright, as long as they have some snow cover. It is dry and cold winter winds that suck the life out of them.
Very pretty area Jeanne.
One of them put out a flower last summer. The one with the flower and the ones surrounding died off. I hope they come back from this winter. We didn't get much snow but it sure got cold.
Name: Marilyn Greenwood Village, CO (Zone 5b) Garden today. Clean next week.
Very nice collection. Hope they all are well this spring. Your zone shows 5a which is close to my own and some survive the cold and winds of Colorado winters and some do not. Hope you have bettter luck.
@gardenglassgems I love love love your shoes planted up!!! I had a black "flat" which a friend gave me I just think they are so cute!
I have a basket that I leave outside, and the main thing is that if there are several days with no rain, I have to water it (and I live in Seattle, so there's plenty of rain, so when I do water it people are like "hmmm why are you watering anything??"
