I'm not convinced that a measly 30 cc's (or whatever paltry amount it was) is enough to do the job. DeLice was 5 oz. and you could put some on the middle of the back and on each side. Oily crap, tho, and made a mess on ME for about a week. But...........we had no flies. And we also had the barn sprayed once a month for flies, so milking during fly season was usually pretty decent.

So far my Cylence treatment seems to be working - even the shy steer who got only a distant shot of it in his general direction seems less bothered.

I just heard on the radio this morning that the Texas extension service (or Agrilife- whatever they call it now) is recommending that we sell all our stock and put the money in savings until the endless drought is over, then buy new cows. They believe it will result in a significant saving over trying to maintain our herds when there is no grass and scarce hay! Some families have spent over a generation building the genetics they want in their herds - not easily replaced. Quite distressing - depressing!

I sometimes wonder if those guys have a clue about cattle and what it really takes to raise and maintain a herd. It ain't all feed!

Yeah, like........if you sell them all, it does take 9 months for a calf.............and then grow it for 15, breed, another 9 months for another calf. "Experts" are SO clueless.

Forgot to add............I am in NY till Tuesday for my milking job. Got here the 10th. My flight leaves at noon Tues. for home. The SU got here this past Tuesday night about 7:15.......he hasn't decided when he will leave. Depends mostly on the weather and what is brewing to the west. He managed to avoid all rain on the way out. No, I am NOT riding home with him.........I had told him I really wished he'd come in the car, then we could go home together. Nope. Well, then, ride 944 miles by yourself. LOL

Worse yet the extension idiots suggest that it will be best to restock with middle aged cows that have already calved instead of heifers. Where are we going to find these cows when we are all supposed to sell out?

So do they put the cows in stasis while waiting for you to buy them back?

Anna, welcome to NY. We had a rain storm this morning, nice after all the dry. Stan baled up a load of third cutting yesterday and is thinking about the second cutting up on the hill for this week.

I am waiting on an MRI appointment. The x-rays showed a good bit of further degeneration in my lower spine. My hope is once we know what's going on that there will be something simple to at least ease the pain. Back with my trusty cane. What fun.

Kathleen, I hope you are feeling better. Have you had the MRI?

Anna, the "experts" sometimes are transfered in from other areas and don't know our weeds, our bugs, our weather. Oh, some of us that live here don't know our weather. New bugs or weeds come from ? and if we are lucky they can look them up. Sometimes we get answers, but it's tax supported so we might as well try.
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.

Well, I am back from NY and my job there. The SU did ride his Harley out.......he got there last Tuesday evening about 7:15. He was kind of waffling as to when he wanted to leave to come back home..........was thinking he might leave Sunday (the 21st)..........hemmed and hawed around, weather didn't look good for Sunday, so he stayed till Tuesday when I left. Good thing, as if he'd have left Sunday he would have been in rain a good majority of the time. He didn't get any rain by leaving on Tuesday. He got home about 6 wed. evening.

I started mowing yard late yesterday afternoon, then got sent on a parts run. Got back about 5;15, went and mowed some more till he got the chopper wagon fixed, then we went to town for the county Beef Producers Steak Fry. Got home about 9:30 from that.........you know how it is............find a bunch of people to yak with. Big Grin

Finished the yard just a bit ago. This morning we had to drag stuff up to the other farm as he wanted to clean out the barnyard. Since the land renter got the hay off up there, SU has a place to spread some poop for a couple days till regrowth starts. Then it was time for lunch. Now SU is at the same neighbor's running our bagger. He's making hay silage bags.

I have a 12x18 pan of roasted tomato sauce makings in the oven. Will let it cool a bit then run it through the food processor. I leave skins and seeds and everything in it............or would I be better off doing the Foley food mill?

I spent most of the morning treating huisache in the east pasture. It was easy to find; nothing else is green. We kill it with a basal spray of Remedy and diesel which probably sounds pretty radical to those of you who don't have huisache, mesquite, or black brush in your pastures. It annoys me to have anything inedible using any available moisture. On the up side: the animals have discovered that they can eat giant ragweed, pigweed, poison ivy and several other nuisance plants. That means, however, that I need to be on the lookout for the toxic ones.
The weather folks kept us hoping that tropical storm Lee would bring rain - which it did to excess in Louisiana - we got hot, dry wind.

Porkpal, sorry to hear that the rain gods have deserted you once again. *sigh*............

We had a fun time yesterday............our neighbors down the road a mile or so have a Labor Day picnic and "out of the field" tractor pull at their place. And after the "pull".........the young bucks take their trucks down to the creek and go "muddin'......." LOL College buddies of their oldest son, and HS boys with their trucks...........I will leave you to imagine. I guess the college son and his friends were trying it out on Sat. night, deemed it pretty good, and made the mistake of going to town later in the evening..............hmmmm..............Dad took the big tractor and chisel plow and buried it a few times in the middle, making a big hole. Too funny when the trucks got stuck over the exhaust pipes. Big Grin Sounded like alot of squeaky brakes, and somebody's bumper got pulled off trying to get pulled out of the hole, but no lasting damage and nobody got hurt. A typical, neighborhood farm get-together. And we didn't get home till 8. Wonderful we didn't have to leave to milk.

Speaking of that.............we milked last Fri. night for my brother so he could go to a tractor pull and participate...........got rained out. But he got time away. And we have a job this Friday night, just the one milking. Been there before, so no need to go before and learn the ropes. The son is in the band, and they are having a special half-time show during the football game, and dad would like to be there. So, they will have cows in, and maybe even started milking, so it won't be bad. And dad will be able to attend. They also wanted us for 2 milkings in Oct. but we have other plans, and can't. Fireworks doings.............. Big Grin

Well, I think we could figure this closed and move over to the September. That way, I won't have to worry about missing anything.
So we'll meet here: The thread "September, moving into autumn" in Farming forum
