There are many wild hibiscus. Where was the photo taken, State and County. I don't think it is Moschuetos.

But there is an entry under "Crimson-eye rose-mallow" that has a flower very similar.

Swamp mallows abound down here in damp areas, and they do self-sow. Maybe this year's mild winter has really given them a boost in that particular spot.

I'd go back for some seeds in a month or so!

I live in Thomson,Georgia and we were just out riding,I believe we were in Lincolnton,Lincoln county Ga. There were plants of all sizes,it seemed they had reseeded with smaller plants growing under larger ones.It was very pretty & swampy nodding Somebody told us they were there every year blooming all summer.

I will have to go back to collect seeds !!What would be about the right time for me to get seeds from them? When it starts cooling off or earlier? I will have to keep an eye on them this summer.
Good reason to take a long drive every few weeks Green Grin!

Hibiscus moscheutos ssp. moscheutos has white flowers with a red eye, and red stems ..

There is also Hibiscus moscheutos ssp. palustris, 'palustris' usually means growing in bogs.

Compare Hibiscus laevis .. the leaves are the wrong shape on the alabamaplants site.

A list of species native to Carolinas and Georgia, others don't match (select search by scientific name, type in Hibiscus).

I would say it's Hibiscus moscheutos ssp. moscheutos, which should be called Hibiscus moscheutos.
