My neighbor gave me cuttings of his mom's Hoya plant. He said it was formerly his grandmother's so it is an old plant.

I'm excited that it is rooting well -
Question is how long before I can enjoy her blooming?

He couldn't remember what color the blooms were.

This is one plant that you repot as little as possible. They do not bloom if in a large pot, and they are almost succulent in their care, their root zone is small and on the surface. So a smaller pot is healthier for them.

Great job rooting that cutting Betsy. Hopefully you'll see a bloom before too long. Patience, patience, patience.

Look at her now!
Thumb of 2020-09-07/piksihk/122c90

I was able to get 3 more cuttings to root but they are not as vigorous as this one.

I spoke to my neighbor, and he said it was his grandmother's plant and his mom now has it; so Hoya maybe 50 years old. His mom has been giving away cuttings to friends.

Can't wait to see her blooms.
Need all the advice from you Hoya experts. This is my first Hoya.

Patience, patience, and more patience. It will bloom eventually, just keep watching for a peduncle to form.

Don't be discouraged if your baby goes dormant this winter. It'll be okay. Smiling I'm always anxious in winter when mine get quiet.

Thks for encouragement everyone.

@wgriff46, I see you're in SE Tex - I'm in Houston area.
The Hoya have been inside near a south facing window. Is that a good place for it?

Betsy,

I have been growing my Hoyas outdoors on the patio. During the winter, when overnight temperatures start dropping below 40, I move them temporarily to the garage. The patio faces N, which is good since the Hoyas don't take well to the scorching SE Texas sun, but they do love plenty of light.

Moving to the garage is starting to get old and I'm not sure how I'm going to handle it as I acquire more varieties. Who knows, maybe a Greenhouse is in the future.

Good luck with your Hoyas. The South facing window is a good bet since they like plenty of light. The most difficult part is not smothering them with care - a little neglect goes a long way.

If your Hoya is that old, it may be Hoya pubicalyx so will bloom red. I'll find a photo of mine tomorrow. Its about 60 year old.

Found the photos more easily than I though I would be. I don't have this plant anymore as it hung in my daughter's room when she was a baby so she always felt it was hers. Smiling

Thanks Lin! I did take cuttings before I have it to daughter so, a new plant in the works. The pot is half pubicalyx and half a variegated carnosa. I tossed the carnosa because I couldn't get rid of the mealybugs. Grumbling

Hurray!

I've moved the Hoyas outdoors under the patio.

Now, I'm dealing with mealy bugs!😠
I've used the Qtip with alcohol and sprayed with Neem but still haven't gotten them under control.

Betsy, what a beautiful Wax Plant (Hoya carnosa) Lovey dubby

Mealybugs can be such a pain, usually requiring more than one application to get rid of newly hatched eggs and a heavy infestation.
