I have fallen in love with a picture from a book of a totally "out of my zone" cactus..

Has anyone ever grown this plant as a house plant? I have very low light. And live in Colorado. I think this is only hardy in Zone 8.

I wonder if it would do well grown under lights? Some of the Echeveria's sure do have interesting and colorful leaves. I especially like the one called Ruffles listed on this page, near the bottom: The Echeverias Database

I see the Rufffles and Truffles are similar and Lynn has them in her database...Maybe she can give us some feedback on the coloration.

I found the plant zone in San Marcos website, I think. They also said it grows 2-3 feet high and 2 feet wide.

LOL ... I wonder if they are fast growers? Maybe grown in a container it would take a long while to reach that size? I visited Southern California in July 2010 and was amazed at the beautiful succulent gardens I saw there! I'd love to have a succulent garden but I'm afraid our humidity would kill them quickly.

I've seen many of Kell's photo's before but not that beauty ... it's really amazing!!

I have an Echeveria Red Grey which from the top has a bit of the same coloration. So I guess that is why I am attacted to the after glow. I just love the way the light seems to come through the Afterglow's leaves.

I think it may just be that I like the colors in the Echeveria group. There are several that I find very nice.

You can over winter the Echeveria indoor with good success, but you will need to give it some additional light.
Also the more sun they get the more bold the colors become. I have over wintered them on my covered porch with no problems, but I am in zone 8. It is a combination of cold and wet that will kill them.

Have you considered getting a "Grow light" florescent bulb and putting it in one of your existing fixtures (ideally a goose neck desk lamp) and putting your plants under that? I think it would be very helpful. You can get them at a specialty bulb store or Pet shop. They come in standard lengths and pins. Even a fixture from the thrift store might be an option as long as it holds a standard size bulb. I mounted a plain inexpensive florescent fixture underneath a shelf on my bookcase. Then I grew african violets under the grow light bulb and they did very well. The closer the plant surface is to the bulb the more effective it is. (6-8 " is as close as I would put one because of the heat output.)
