Do you use a potting bench to work with your daylilies?

I was reading about hobby and pro hybridizers keeping their breeding plants in sheltered pots, and thought maybe its time to get something to help with the stand-up work of patio plants. i'm not sure if regular pallets would be sturdy enough to do the following, but am intrigued (aren't most pallets made with thin/weak boards these days?):

Tina, you're getting it bad! Love the potting bench idea.
I use mine often, especially when potting up seedlings.

I actually found a little plastic portable potting bench/tub that I set up on this little table, and it's great for potting up seedlings and I can set it up in a shady spot and sit while doing it -- great for my bad knees and ankles. It doesn't weigh hardly anything either!

When working with seeds or seedlings, I do use a potting table that Dh built for me. It's taller than most because I'm 5'8" tall. Works great for little stuff. When I'm doing big plants I take a metal chair or anything comfortable for me to sit on. I have a tub that I got at a local Home Depot that's made to mix mortar in. It's low on one end and works wonderfully for soil to be mixed in and then to get it out of easily. They sale these things on garden websites for big bucks but I checked they are 12.65 now, when I got mine about 5 yeaers ago it was $6. I bought two, one for the table and one for outside. I sit with my tub of soil between my knees(this is where the height of the chair is important) and put soil in pots and plant the daylilies between my knees. I worked like this last fall and repotted 800 plants into nearly 1500 pots. I spent from mid July to mid November doing this many hours a day. I had my metal chair where the legs would be lower to the ground in the front and I didn't have any back pain to speak of if I got up and walked around ocasionally. Which I had to do when I got about 6 pots done to get them out of the way.

This is my way. It's cheap but works great for me. I'm sure there are many many ways to do this.

One more thing. I use big plastic storage tubs for soil and fertilize and anything else to keep stuff in. I lovem!! If you have to leave them outside, I would recommed getting Rubbermaid. I have 2 huge square ones that I got on clearance many years ago, maybe 10 or more, and they are still like new and they have been outside in the weather for that long. They last!

I had been asking my DH to build a potting bench he likes to recycle when an opportunity presents itself. When we got a new water softener he used the old salt tank which is very heavy plastic. He cut a piece of it to size for the top then built a wood frame attached the top and finished it up by adding wheels to the legs on one end so I can wheel around. When I am done using it can be hosed off to clean it up and easily put it away in our garden shed.

If you will lead DH to think he is the one to come up with the idea, you will more than likely get your potting bench sooner!! This has always worked for me. Of course, it took me many years to learn this little trick, in fact my dear mother-in-law taught me this many years ago.

yes ... i have it bad ... real bad, Leslie ... spent the day mesmerized by blooms that tumbled in with the sudden cool down today, and did just what mona said ('didn't you mention, dh, a couple years back, that we could turn a pallet into something useful?') and even got him to accept the fact that just a few more daylilies may show up in the back yard before end of summer (he was not happy to hear the disappointing news about tissue cultures, no-sir-ee! gotta get some good stock in here...). this intro to luscious daylilies is magnifying my e-v-e-r-y weakness, but in the very most enjoyable ways

Aint life fun! You really learn to appreciate all God's creations when you get addicted to daylilies. Just something about being outdoors in early morning with a slight breeze, birds chirping everywhere and the dazzling colors of daylilies spotlighting the glory of true beauty.
