Somehow I don't think it's good. Assuming it's bad, how do I get rid of it?

Am I correct that it's not good, and I should be trying to remove it?

Definitely not spider mites. They're on the underside of leaves and there will be a mottled appearance and slight webbing maybe, but nothing cottony like that. It might be mealy bugs or a type of scale insect. I can't see well enough to tell for sure. Never heard of either of them being a problem on daylilies though...... So, could be something else.

I would say its mealy bugs. If you look under some of the cottony stuff you may actually find one. This is where they hide their eggs. Here's one photo that looks like yours. http://herselfshoustongarden.c...
Just google mealybug and then click on the images for the photos.
I've never seen them on daylilies, just other plants I had and I has plenty of mealybug destroyers (look very similar to mealybugs, this is their disguise ) to eat them.
If it's only on this one or just a few you can dab alcohol on them to kill them. They can multiply rapidly and if they take a liking to daylilies they could harm them because they are sucking insects just like spider mites.
If you have lots of ladybugs around see if you can catch some and put over by these daylilies.
Oh by the way, they like plants with lots of nitrogen (just like aphids) and daylilies have high amounts of nitrogen in the foliage especially if fertilized regularly.

If you do get a bad infestation then get a systemic insecticide that will work on them (Bayer Complete) or try an insecticidal soap.

Someone posted about spittlebugs on facebook yesterday -- I think that's what drew my attention to the scape this morning.

Looks like mealybugs to me, too. You can wash them off with a spray of water, but they will just go to another plant. Sometimes I will take my fingers and wipe off the white. The actual "bug" will jump off and go somewhere else once disturbed. If you see more on other plants, you may want to take more proactive steps to get rid of them. I was spraying Roundup today and noticed mealybugs on several different plants and shrubs as I walked around.

That's the only one I've seen anything on, and I hosed it off. Will keep an eye on her. They can do whatever they want on the other side of the yard, but not in this bed. This is my "special" bed. The other side of the yard is pretty much all NOIDs.

Will continue to keep an eye on them.

Hey Mona, I think it's called a stick caterpillar (there are hundreds of species of these)
