Make Your Own Plant Markers

By goldfinch4
June 22, 2012

I was trying to think of what I could use for plant markers rather than purchase them. It gets expensive if you’ve got a lot of plants! When I run out of ideas I go ask my husband, who always comes up with something that makes me slap my forehead and say “Why didn’t I think of that”!

What are you using for a stake to attach the plexiglass label to? Or did I misread your posting?

I think the plexiglass is the stake?

Yes, the plexiglass is the part I use for the stake. I attach P-Touch labels to the plexiglass. It's nice that you can cut the plexiglass any size you want too. There are plenty of times I don't have a marker/stake available that is an appropriate size.

I like that they are small and not obtrusive.
I hate the look of a bunch of usually white tags sticking out of the ground.
Used plastic cutlery works also.

I used to spray my white tags black, but that's a hassle too. I like the clear look a lot.

Another great idea to add to my list! DH seems to have a little of everything around here so guess I should ask him. I may have to invest in a label maker though. Thanks for the great "how to" pictures.

You're welcome Pegi. The label maker is well worth the money, in my opinion.

Thanks for sharing this idea with us. I guess it sometimes pays to save things..My DH is still looking for a tool he always used to sharpen the lawnmower blades at our former home. Supposed to be in some kind of brown bag; I had wanted him to sharpen my garden tools..Hadn't found it yet. Well, guess what July is going to be for cleaning out the garage. It's there I'm sure, as he never throws out anything that he "used to use" all the time..even though we don't have to mow our lawns now. I told him he gave the self propeled lawn mower to our daughter, maybe he gave that filing tool to her too.

Well, it's good when you can actually find a use for something that you save. Hilarious! Every once in a while I just get on a kick where I have to do a major clean out of some area. It does feel good to get things cleaned up!

Anybody know where to get scrap pieces of plexiglass? That's something we don't have laying around, surprisingly.

I've used the p-touch labeler to label black tubing for my microsprinklers, and the printing faded out in the sun.

Would you please update us maybe at the end of the summer, as to how the black labels are standing up to the weather?

Elaine, I've used the black labels for years on other markers. Some have been in my garden for 3 years and haven't faded at all. Some are specifically made for outdoor use so be sure to look for that when you buy them.

The yellow tape with black print is easy to see also. My son finally found the instruction book to his labelmaker and bought it over to me. Guess what? It's still on the D/R table and haven't had chance to look at it yet. I guess when I go to use it again, I'll see if I can figure it out.

I use black on clear tape with my P-touch and it is unobtrustive and has lasted well into 4 years with no fading. I stick them to the plain (fairly inexpensive) aluminium 2-pronged stakes which can be adjusted heightwise as you like, and can get two lines on the label if need be. I only label the plants in my herb garden - for my perennials I just stick a short bamboo stick in the ground as they die back in the fall so I remember there is something there.

That P-touch tape is some good stuff, isn't it! Thumbs up
