Picked my first a couple days ago.
It was a winter sown accident came up in some flower container.
This is the earliest I have had ripe tomatoes

I think I will try some seeds next year, I normally just buy plants.

sometimes letting nature take it's course is better.. I usually get self seeded plants around from the critters .. and I usually just leave em be unless they are too close to another plant

I wintersow tomatoes every year. I picked the first two Matina yesterday. They're a small fruit anyway, but these are about half the size they should be. And I have 2 Snow White that are about ready.

Currently 93° with a heat index of 98. Actual temp is supposed to hit around 100 again today. Still no rain in sight.
I've been watering since about 7:30 this morning. Two sprinklers running now. Our water bill will be phenomenal.

I've planted tomatoes here every year for the past 12 years and never once had a volunteer come up!

Ouch! Karen, that weather sounds just awful!

It really is awful, Woofie. Currently 96°, heat index 107. So I'm in air conditioning eating ice cream.

I think volunteers only come up in messy gardens. If you pick and eat every tomato or till the garden too soon in the spring you don't get volunteers

Ha ha ha ha ha!!! So much for that theory! You've never seen my garden in the fall and spring. And right now, for that matter.....

It probably has more to do with the varieties you plant. I'd imagine you'd be more likely to get volunteers from the heirloom varieties.

I'm getting lots of wondrous bites of red deliciousness off of my Sweet 100 plants
A few I squeezed out the seeds onto the soil at the base of the plants. Today I saw lots of new seedlings.

We've only harvested a few Matinas, much smaller than they should be, but good just the same, and a few Snow White.

I have ONE nearly ripe little Sweetie that I'm watching like a hawk, but there are LOTS of little green ones, so I'm going to be swimming in them soon! Been snacking on strawberries, too. YUM!

i just moved from upstate new york to rutland MA so i did nt have time to start my vegetable plants from seeds but i did manage to buy two tomato plants here. one of the plants wa labeled 4th of july and i don't know what the other one. is. both have tomatoes on them and one is just about eady to pick.
