I've noticed this on Holy Guacamole and Joan Senior. They are rather far apart so I don't think it spread from one to the other. I pulled apart one of the Joan Senior buds and didn't see any sign of insect activity. Anyone know what this is, and if it is something I need to be concerned about?
Bumps can be from trip, but I don't think I have ever seen a growth like that on the outside of a bud. On the petal surface, rarely, but not on a bud like you ave shown.
I see that all the time here, I believe it's from thrips. You won't see any insects if you pull apart the bud because they've usually gone onto the next life stage by time you see the damage. Shoot it's hard enough to see the adults most of the time.
On the ones here there's usually lots of those protrusions on the bud. I'll see if I spot any tomorrow and take a photo.
Of course it could just be a rare occurrence and have nothing to do with thrips. Sometimes the buds here won't have any other signs of thrips like the splotchy coloring on the blooms.
Dot I have seen that on daylilies with ruffles. Not all of them do it or even the ones that do don't do it all the time. There are a couple of James' seedlings that do this often and both have ruffled edges. I had a photo of it on one, but I must have deleted it.
