Which cultivars are the very tallest? I have a very tall (nearly 5 ft in a good year) with very strong and husky leaves and leaf bases. How do I search for irises with this characteristic?

Again on Cubits, you can do the advanced search and get heights. You can check TB, and then either check tall for the classification, which will show you all that members have considered tall, or you can put in a desired height, say 40 and you will come up with a lot of hits.

Stepping Out is the tallest I own, although nowhere near 50". But, even as tall as it is, I have never had to stake it

My three tallest varieties:

HAWAIIAN RAIN
THAT'S ALL FOLKS
STOP FLIRTING

I think HAWAIIAN RAIN is registered as quite a bit shorter, but for me it's very tall -- I love it!

Intimidator is said to be 50 inches tall, although it hasn't bloomed for me yet...just got it last year...but I only bought it because of the height it boasted! Ha ha!

I need Intimidator then, geeze. I put my irises in with other flowers, Lucy, and I make sure to put the taller ones next to taller flowers, so it keep them erect.

Some of my tallest that seem to stand up to the wind are:
Tying Yellow Ribbons, World Class, Dutchman's Dream, Getano and Ginger Ice, Dreaming Of Rio, Before the Storm, and Passion and Purity I'm not sure of their hight, as I usually don't get too concerned with that.
Some taller ones that don't stand up to the wind are:
Lights Camera Action, Mexican Holiday, Made Of Magic, and Breakers

Victoria Falls was very popular and even won the Dykes in 1985 despite this fault. The very worst one I ever had was Lawrence Welk....a Danielson TB iris. I think it may have had a little Aril in it's back ground and I only had it one year as did several of my friends. Then were discarded it..

Lights, Camera Action is one I also need to stake. I contacted Mid-American garden about Intimidator and they said they no longer sell it because it wasn't a popular color. (looks good to me!) I can't find it anywhere online except for Stout Gardens, who are sold out. Any idea where to find one?

I always stake my taller stalks now because it seems that every year we end up getting 50 mph winds that will really take the taller ones down. I get those wonderful circle stakes from Lowe's. They're green and they allow the stalks to move around a bit.

AMAZON QUEEN is registered at 40". It only bloomed once for me (in a pot), so I can't swear to the height, but it did seem relatively high.

PAUL BLACK is in the ground here. It is registered as 42", it IS relatively tall, but sometimes I need to stake it.

If you like Space Agers, PURPLE PEOPLE EATER is registered at 41", and yes, it is tall (and late season).

Evaluating an iris seedling, hopefully for rebloom
