Glossary Tip - Monoecious

By wildflowers
July 6, 2012

A "Monoecious" plant has male and female flowers living on the same plant. They are considered imperfect flowers. Squash is an example of a monoecious plant. In the image the male flower is on the left, the female flower on the right.

The blossoms are great as a carrier of cheeses, mushroom mousse, herb smoked salmon etc. to your mouth!

I wasn't going there, yet somehow I did look at this anyway. I haven't thought about monoecious and dioecious in years! Those terms...takes me back to my original state of confusion over them. Now I have to figure them out all over again, so it all makes sense again. First comes spelling them, of course.

Here ya go, Linda..

"Mono" tends to mean "one" or "single"
"Dioecious" is from Greek meaning "two houses".

Monoecious (one house)
Dioecious (two houses)

SO! If a plant is "one house" (monoecious) it has all it needs to fulfill its legacy, both a male and female living in the same house to continue ever onward.

If a plant is "two houses" (Dioecious), it requires a helper in the form of a partner to continue ever onward, e.g., one house is female only, the other male only, and they need to be introduced (or go on a blind date with an insect or the wind)! Smiling

Have I confused you even more?

Thanks...not confusing!
So mono = only one plant needed
dio = needs two plants
Will work on remembering~if I can figure out where I put my darn memory!

Shoe, that's a great way to remember the difference! Thumbs up I gave your post a thumbs up too!

Linda, I think you can "star" Shoe's post and put it in your ATP memory;

...can't we do that?

Another good suggestion! And, by the way, I very much appreciated the photo along with the tip. VERY clear! I'd never noticed!

yep, it works. I just starred it and now it's on my profile page. The only problem is it's listed as - a post on "food" so you may not remember that's the post about "Monoecious and Dioecious" Shrug! Hilarious!

Food is good! Hilarious! But I think you want to star the tip, not the thread. Although, maybe not! Hilarious!
