I agree I would put them in their permanent pots, like twit said. Tabby and Sandi can give you more info on the types of pots/containers that would hold up to your difficult winter conditions. But I agree with twit on that topic also, good quality glazed containers should hold up very well as long as they don't water log.

Thanks --- It was a struggle just to get them all in pots, so unless I really need to move them I would rather wait a week or two at least. And I might have to go buy more pots to make it work $$$. But I want to do what is necessary for them to survive and will do what I need to do.

Thanks for your advice. I tip my hat to you.

I wish clay and glazed pots could withstand our winters but they eventually crumble and break. A friend of mine gave me several potted semps and one pot had a beautiful blue glaze. It took several years, but the pot came apart in layers. I never water these pots in the winter but there was enough moisture to break the pot. Same with unglazed terracotta pots. If the pots are new you can probably leave them in the pots for this winter and transplant next year. It took a few years before the pots fell apart.

Didn't I see a hypertufa pot in one of your pictures? Those survive the winters and the semps do really well in those. I like them better than plastic pots by far. Unfortunately they are expensive to buy. They aren't very expensive to make provided you plan on making 10 or more. I've made 10 big ones this year so far and am going to get some nice blue and green colorant later this week and then make some more.

yes I have 3 hypertufa, 2 already have semps in them. I would love to have more but the prices precludes, unless there are some on sale at the end of the season. Thought I might check Timberline to see what they might have left. I know the ones up at Harlequin that are large size are $60++++

Thanks, so maybe I could leave them for this season and re pot them in spring...

I did buy some materials to make Hypertufa (a small one or two) myself but have not done anything with it yet.

Thanks for your advice. I tip my hat to you.

My order came today from SMG. Don grows the most awesome semps.
Here is what I got. I can't begin to tell you how awesome all of these are.

Semp. 'Gingerbread Boy' The name says it all
Semp. 'Just Plain Crazy' I smile and chuckle each time I look at this Kevin Vaughn cultivar. It is 'Just Plain Awesome'.
Semp. 'New Rhumba' A variegated semp that is suppose to be stable in the variegation. Hurray!
Semp. 'Pacific Velveteen' The loveliest texture and color to this Pacific Series semp. Lovey dubby
Semp. 'Pacific Wick's Bloom' Can't wait to watch this one go through all the seasons.
Semp. 'Quintessence' So lovely
Semp. 'Seminole' Interesting, and I love the name. I may start a collection of semps with Native American names. Hurray!
Semp. 'Shirley Moore' The sweetest semp.
Semp. 'Strider' I have another semp from the 'Lord of the Rings' series. Hurray! And it looks like it is going to be a real beauty.
Semp. 'Virginius' Lovely green to break up all that dark color I have in my semps. Lovely form.

On my way out to take photos now that I have them all in the raised bed. Hurray!

Congratulations. Looks like you broke the piggy bank.. Rolling on the floor laughing Can't wait tot see the pics.

I went to Timberline yesterday to look for hypertufa and what they had was a bt too pricey for me. So I just bought some plants to put in the big one I bought a couple of weeks ago.

All I could think was --- OH if Lynn could see all these,, why didn't I bring my camera--- no I cannot buy more I need to take care of what I have.

I forgot to take my camera. They did have a $1. table but they had mostly Echevera which I love but the care through the winter is not for me.

It was truly great fun, wish you were here..... PICTURES TO FOLLOW of my new 4 plants.

I WISH I was there. Rolling on the floor laughing
We sure could have gotten into trouble together. Whistling
But what fun it would have been. Lovey dubby

You went without a camera? Sad Just think of all the photos you could have taken for us to see, and add to the database. Rolling my eyes.

I said I wasn't going to buy anymore plants this year, but I did not have my SMG fix yet this year. Can't go without at least a few plants from Don each year.

Thanks, won't know for about a week. But am praying no return of the brain tumor.

Now if the clouds which have rolled in will provide enough relief from the intense heat so that I can work on adding to the plants in the hypertufa planter.

Going to Tagawa tomorrow as they have a farmer's market. Maybe I can find a semp or similar to add to the pot.

It is always exciting to see the changes that come with the seasons. Here we even get to observe them in the winter, since we get very little snow.
I feel so spoiled. Whistling
